WISCONSIN: Voting systems/counties & election outcomes
Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 11:50 PM by AmBlue
It is very interesting to note that most all of the rural areas in Wisconsin vote on DRE type touchscreens or "blackbox" voting machines. While most of the cities-- Madison, Green Bay, La Crosse, Stevens Point, Rhinelander and Superior vote on paper ballot systems. Unfortunately, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Sheboygan, Eau Claire and Fond Du Lac still vote on touchscreens.

Let's watch and see how the vote tallies compare to voting systems.

1. Wow, that's inaccurate.
Milwaukee and Waukesha, at the very least, vote on paper--counted by machine, but it's a pen and paper, voter verified, hand recounted.
The machines for the disabled are touch-screen, but they produce a PAPER ballot, which is verified by the voter or his/her aide, and counted as usual.

2. Well your post is VERY good news then.
I guess the old Verifier hasn't been verified in a while then. Do you live in WI?

4. Yup. Milwaukee County. Lived in Waukesha for several years, too.
I don't think elections here are particularly hackable--sure, anything can be tampered with, even a pen-and-paper ballot that's hand-counted. But it would take a lot of coordination, between uncoordinated entities, with disparate interests, to radically change an election here.

6. Here's a more current list of voting systems
From the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board: http://gab.wi.gov/elections-voting/voting-equipment/vot...

Looks like only a very small number of jurisdictions (2) use the DRE touchscreens, while the rest of the state is using either paper ballots or paper ballots with optical scans. Voters with disabilities use Vote-Pad, AutoMark or touchscreen DREs.

5. paper ballots are still counted by machine and put through a central tabulator
which can be easily manipulated.

7. Right, but in the event of a recount or litigation....

...there are paper ballots in 99+% of the state to audit the digital count. That is very good news.
