Armed security guard hired by Apple shoots and kills a smash-and-grab suspect at San Diego store
An armed security guard, hired by Apple to protect one of its San Diego stores, confronted and killed a smash and grab suspect in a gun battle early Monday.

One person is dead and two people have been taken into custody following the shooting at Otay Ranch Towne Center in the Eastlake section of Chula Vista according to police.

The Apple store manager was working inside when just before 7 a.m. the guard confronted two men and a woman. The suspects had smashed into the store's front doors, sending shattered glass out onto the sidewalk.

The guard told police a gun battle started when one suspect produced a handgun. More than a dozen yellow evidence markers were on the ground just outside the store's front door.

9. One of them not exactly unscathed....
Officers entered an alley between two buildings and pulled out two people. A female was cuffed and walked to a patrol car. The second, a man, was originally cuffed and patted down. Then, he was treated by medical personnel for a gunshot wound in the buttocks before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

4. Sad all around. But the guy was armed and another article
that I read says that he actually fired on the guard. The guard is in the right.

8. If you are committing a crime and draw a gun, it might not end well for you
I'm sure those involved were aware of the risks.

10. Unrec for misleading headline: "gun battle started when ONE SUSPECT PRODUCED A HANDGUN"
This headline makes it sound like a trigger-happy rent-a-cop shot someone for breaking a display case to steal an iPad. As soon as a criminal draws a gun in the commission of a crime, all bets are off. Sounds like the guard acted in a decisive and professional manner to stop an armed and dangerous man from possibly killing innocent employees and bystanders.
