Speaker of the House John Boehner claims that the “poor and lazy” caused the current economic crisis
Boehner's "poor and lazy" comments to Rolling Stone reflect his party's beliefs
April 4th, 2011 10:34 am ET .
Leo Kapakos NY Political Buzz Examiner

Speaker of the House John Boehner claims that the “poor and lazy” caused the current economic crisis during an interview Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone. Boehner stuck to Republican Party talking points during the interview until Taibbi during a coffee break asked Boehner about today's young people. Apparently unaware he was still on record, Boehner, let Taibbi know how he really felt about poor Americans:

"Can't pay your student loan? Face it your parents were lazy and you couldn't afford college. The world needs ditch diggers and you were born into a family of them. Can't pay your mortgage? Your house was too expensive and you couldn't afford it."It's not going to happen in the US. The kids here are too fat, too lazy, to addicted to TV, fast food, cheap credit, and facebook.” I have news for you- there are plenty of jobs out there- the unemployed don't want them. Today's college student feels entitled to make at least $24 right after college. I'm not worried for this country- there are a few of them who actually want to work, take Mark Zucker(sic). You don't build a site like facebook out of thin air- it takes talent and hard work. I went to a community college and all I saw were people sitting in front of computers typing away, their eyes were fixed. Probably just facebooking away."

For the record Mr. Boehner, I was raised in the inner city and went to a community college and I did fine. Moreover, Mark Zuckerberg is not your typical American college student. Zuckerberg was a child prodigy who came from a well-to-do family and went to Harvard without the help of student loans. By the way, there are claims that Zuckerberg stole the idea and code for Facebook so he may have been a bit ethically challenged which you forgot to mention. If that’s true, he missed his calling on Wall Street – but I digress.

John Boehner and his comments are unfortunately a microcosm of the views of today’s Republican/Tea Party when it comes to America’s poor and middle class. Screw the less fortunate in society- they deserve it. The kids are fat, lazy, and they don’t want to work and their parents are buying homes that they can’t afford. If it were up to John Boehner, we wouldn’t have programs in place that benefit the poor and middle class. Programs like - the Federal Fair Housing Law, Medicaire, Social Security, Food Stamps, Federally sponsored student loan programs, Head Start, Unemployment Compensation, and Collective Bargaining Rights - would not exist.

38. Americans too dumb to realize they are just as expendable as those 'poor, lazy people'
I see this a lot, tea baggers w/o the introspection to figure out that they are just as dependent and fragile as everyone else. If they want to destroy their own lives, fine. But they harm mine too when they support these plutocratic, social darwinist policies.

They can't pay for K-12 w/o public assistance, can't retire w/o public assistance, can't function w/o a massive public infrastructure system (roads, quality control, military, police), then attack the public system and those dependent on it.

66. yep
Most of them figure since they are white and have jobs (even if they are shitty jobs) that they are immune from the negative effects of plutocracy. They have no idea how expendable they are. Again, if they only did it to themselves that is fine. But they want me to live under a plutocratic, social darwinist social agenda too and that is what makes me angry.

"No, sire," came the reply. "It is a revolution."

Lazy Financial "geniuses" who couldn't be bothered making money the hard, old fashioned way and instead decided to game the system. Republicans are the laziest people around, because they are always looking to use the government as a source of easy billion dollar handouts, farm aid or no-bid contracts.

Middle class. A business owner. Sweeping the floor was honorable work and his father was damned right to have his teenage son doing the work. But milking it as if it were the original "rags to riches" story is BS.

6. Thank goodness for our popular media
Now that Tan Man is in charge of all the really swell drinky-drinky parties in Washington, nobody will have the bad taste to ask him about any of this. Sure, Boehner can spout off to Taibbi with his real feelings, but who reads Rolling Stone except a bunch of dirty fucking hippies? Nobody cares what they think, and besides, that's exactly who Boehner was talking about so, you know, fuck 'em.

This is Republican governance in a nutshell: The system doesn't work for certain people, and it's not supposed to. If you're poor or uneducated or insufficiently motivated to be a raging asshole like John Boehner, you don't deserve to have anything in the system work for you anyway. Be a winner, and the system will work for you; just like Mark Zuckerberg.

The poor are a result of this economic crisis. The lazy are still the same lazy that were around in economic boom periods, I fail to see how they caused it when they were just a prevalent during boom times.

That has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have heard in a long time.

37. My first reaction was,
why would Boehner agree to an interview with Matt Taibbi? It just didn't ring true. At the end of the article the author says: "Note:This story originated on Rumorville.com and regardless of whether or not it's true, it's safe to say not a stretch from how the Republican's view the poor and middle class."

Of course, I do believe as he says, that is how republicans view the poor and middle class, but they would never tell Matt Taibbi that.

Next, the war against Iraq will be hailed as an outstanding success, just as Afghanistan would have been had Obama not mucked it up.

Let us not forget President Bush's outstanding leadership in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He did the American thing and let New Orleans drown, or least the poor in New Orleans who couldn't afford to transport themselves out of there which they would be able to if they weren't able to do because the poo are lazy and don't flip enough burgers at minimum wage, which should be eliminated, by the way.

29. Wow.
This shows what Boner (yea, I spelled it wrong, so what?) thinks of American students. He just assumes that they're lazy and wasting their time on FaceBook.
I went to a community college and all I saw were people sitting in front of computers typing away, their eyes were fixed. Probably just facebooking away.

Hey John, do you think it's possible that they were doing schoolwork? Are you aware that a lot of schoolwork is done on computers these days? Were you even aware that that's possible?

Apparently you assume that computer = Facebook.

What does their eyes being fixed prove? Their eyes would also be fixed if they were doing schoolwork. Their eyes would be fixed if they were reading a textbook.

Apparently Boner just assumes the worst about people. That explains a lot.

Hey John, maybe we should just shut down all of those community colleges, since they're not real colleges anyway. They're nothing but a WiFi network for FaceBooking.

Asshole.

Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 03:53 PM by bongbong
repigs are good in only two areas: crime/theft/lying, and unintentional irony.

Today's episode of irony is the fact that Orange Boner got his "pull myself up by my own bootstraps" start by working for his daddy in his daddy's bar. Most repigs say to themselves, "Why can't that lazy bum get a job like I did in my daddy's business???"

The fact it was a bar in Orange Boner's case explains a WHOLE lot about Orange Boner. His drunkeness, his sense of entitlement, and his total brainlessness.

Does he have any idea how hard it is to live on the streets? I wish above all wishes that John 'Shithead' Boehner strikes out in the game of life and ends up destitute and homeless. His lies hurt America and is one of the causes of this horrible treatment of the working poor.

If he really believes that it was the poor and lazy, he has no idea of what has been going on in the financial system in the world whatsoever! Anyone with half a brain can see that the bankers and speculators on Wall street are who drove the country into financial ruin. This is just more of Boner spewing his propaganda. I'm sure that he really know's what's up with this whole thing, and who really pays him.

1.) It's source is a rumor website.
2.) He grew up in modest circumstances himself. That would be the ultimate "screw you, I have mine" mentality. I'd like to think it isn't true.

The bottom line is that his actions are important. Regardless of his true beliefs, he's a corrupt corporate stooge.

65. Screw you boner. For many years you rethugs have been making us,
the poor, the disabled, the elderly and the minorities take the blame. Again screw you. This time we are not going to just sit here and take the blame. Your criminal banksters and outsourcing corporations are totally to blame. Not anyone else. This time we have the middle class with us and we are not alone. We are going to stand together with those in the middle class and we are going to make you pay in 2012 if not before.

I encourage those people who have always been blamed for anything bad in this country - the poor, the disabled, the elderly and the minorities to join the middle class, especially the union members, whenever they are demonstrating for their cause. The bigger the crowd the louder we can yell - they will no longer be able to stuff their ears with cotton and pretend that they are the good guys.

Solidarity is not just for unions. It is just the example the unions have set for all of us.

You can't provide tax incentives to companies that ship work overseas with taxpayer (aka workers) money and then complain that taxpayers (aka workers) are a bunch of lazy non working needy bums when they no longer work because you used their money to put them in the situation they are now in....or something like that....nevermind, I'm checking facebook...

can anyone see the complete contradictions and total elitism in this quote? (I know most of you here on DU can, it's a rhetorical question.) It's that this drunken moron can't see it, and will never see it, nor will his zombie followers see it.

So, instead of working to better yourself so your children don't become ditch diggers, you should just giveup and be lazy? Don't even think about trying to give your family a nice home to live in, you're a ditch digger family! (Elitist much?) The kids are too fat and lazy? (even though they're sitting at college on computers typing away? (he's assuming they're on Facebook and not working on their classwork). And don't even think that you can go to college and earn what the salary is for the subject you majored in, you're just a ditch digger, after all.

I'm glad he said all of this and it was published in Rolling Stone - a publication read by many young people. Also, many of the Tea Partiers claim to be "ditch diggers", i.e. normal, everyday people - not rich, college edgeeecated people. He offended a very broad group of people. Dumbass!

RumorMiller (the actual name of the site referenced) appears to be a phony news site, ala The Onion. Case in point, another article on the site:

Metallica Sues Daughtry for Copyright Infringement

80’s Hair band Metallica, best known for suing Napster and being on Beavis’ shirt announced today that they will be suing American Idol winner Daughtry. Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich made the announcement outside of the office where he kicks puppies. “It’s obvious to anyone who listens to Daughtry that he sucks ass. Well I got news for him- sucking ass is Metallica’s sound. There is no way he could suck as much ass as he does without having stolen it from us, so we’re suing him,” Ulrich announced as he sent a 3-month-old Labradoodle flying.

http://www.redesign.rumormiller.com/story.php?title=met...

Plus, this referenced article comes from The Examiner, which is essentially a blogging mill (since bloggers work cheap/for free).

Furthermore, Boner ain't gonna talk to someone like Taibbi, particularly off the record.

I call bullshit on this one, but I'd love to see Boehner deny it!

120. Sad...
Honestly, this guy is just a complete idiot. I hope Americans prove him wrong. However, I will say, some Americans ARE too fat and lazy to give that an honest try.

Obviously, however, not everyone who's poor is fat, lazy, uneducated and unwilling to accept jobs.

133. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when satire is so compelling...
in its brush up with the truth. I know Bonehead hasn't overtly made these comments, but the policies of the party he represents sure stand up to the sniff test.

The GOP are definitely acting like they believe this tripe.

142. This is an hoax. A good one, but still not true
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2011/04/king-of-real-ame...

Update: Hah. Apparently, this may be a hoax. If so, it's a damned good one. It sounds exactly like every other privileged jerk out there. I saw it originally on Young Turks and then Pam had it and I didn't check the rumormiller link, just did the polite thing and linked them. My fault for not going there.

But hey, when you're known for your tippling and your loathing of working people, this is exactly the kind of thing people will believe of you...

The bill/millionaires showered the American workers with reinvestment monies derived from their Reaganesque tax breaks, but we were too "poor and lazy" to take advantage of it?

154. I want them to keep talking, keep pushing ludicrous policy, keep hating and keep poking their finger...
in the eyes of the majority. I want them to scream loudly about killing Social Security and Medicare. I want them to yell at the top of their lungs that they hate Unions. I want their FOX GOP Fraudcasting to continue its barrage of craziness and lies and then finally, once all is said and done, I want all of us to have finally woken up and beat them back to their dirty filthy gutters, caves and back under their Kochroach infested rocks and insect infested swamps. They are dirty filthy Anal Warts that need to be removed to end the pain that they cause for everyone except themselves, corporations, the rich and the Democracy destroying Koch Klan Korporation.
