1. Ruth Kapanke was sentenced to 14 days in jail
UPDATE: Ruth Kapanke was sentenced to 14 days in jail on work/treatment release , with a second charge suspended and to be dismissed after 18 months if she stays drug- and alcohol-free. Story.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ruth Kapanke, wife of State Sen. Dan Kapanke, R-LaCrosse, is to appear in court for a plea hearing this afternoon, on charges she stole prescription painkillers from an elderly woman she befriended. She apparently has negotiated a plea bargain that will end the case.

2. Notice the date of the story:TUESDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2005. Very old news.
I live in La Crosse and if this was actually current news it would be a big front page story.

3. Once a crook always a Republican...
Isn't that the way the saying goes?

4. It's not what you do, it's who you know.
Old news perhaps, but the sentencing (and investigation) disparities here are noteworthy. A non-white teenager suspected of breaking and entering compounded by theft of prescription drugs would more than likely have been prosecuted on each of the dozen counts, and sentenced accordingly (not 14 days, certainly).

6. The salient point is that this will have nothing to do with the recall election here.
It didn't have much of an impact back in 2005 and none in 2008 at Kapanke's last election and it won't this time either. We have enough on Kapanke without dragging what his wife did years ago into it.

Yes, life is unfair (that's real old news). The rich and the well known can and will get away with more than the rest of us can no matter what their political affiliation may be.
