Obama Rule Review Leaves Some Nervous, Skeptical
Barack Obama Rule Review

NANCY BENAC 04/ 3/11 08:25 AM ET AP

WASHINGTON —.....

All across town, agencies are holding hearings, scouring specs, setting up websites and assembling plans to carry out President Barack Obama's order for a "retrospective review" of decade upon decade of government regulations.

The hunt is on for rules that are – to pull a few words from the order itself – excessively burdensome, redundant, inconsistent, overlapping, outmoded, ineffective, insufficient. Or, as the president put it, "just plain dumb."

Regulations translate laws into action, and touch all aspects of American life.

...............

Obama's pledge to put the federal rulebook under a microscope has conservatives clamoring for him to rip up pages of red tape, yet skeptical he will deliver. Liberals increasingly worry that the Obama administration will bow to political pressure and weaken or scrap important health, safety and environmental protections.

The notion that there are reams of "dumb" rules ripe for the taking is rejected by experts on federal regulation. They say any easy targets already were eliminated by past administrations that made their own runs at over-regulation......................

I think there is the potential for this to be a MAJOR distraction. While we argue how many bolts should be in a board-Congress will pass major bills. YUP--I can see it now.

4. I don't understand your reference.
I have some very comfortable shoes I may be willing to throw in the general direction of D.C., but I'd love to know what you mean.

5. While campaigning he said he would walk with unions...
...if their rights to collective bargaining were threatened. He said he had comfortable shoes, and would be right out here with them (my paraphrasing).

2. All those "excess" regulations left lying around by Reagan, Poppy Bush, Bubba and Dimson?
Edited on Sun Apr-03-11 01:46 PM by No Elephants

Well, good thing Obama never purged the Bushbots from his admnistration. They should be able to root out the last of anything still protecting us.

Democratic administrations can often get away with more than Republicans in certain areas. For example, Reagan or Poppy may have been reviled for Bubba's welfare reforms or his repeal of Glass Steagall or NAFTA. With Bill in the Oval Office, though, Republicans were victorious while Democrats were supportive.

10. I won't be a major distraction
Even a lot of DUers think that laws and regulations are just things that get in our way.

Yes, they get in the way! They get in the way of people who want to steal your house out from under you! Or want to poison your groundwater!

I'd like a lot MORE things getting in the way of what's going on lately.

Mostly, the rest of the people will shrug, like when Glass-Steagel was repealed...until the damage is done.

12. No doubt there are
some regs that are in need of the trashcan but this will sure open up a can of ugly worms. I think it is exactly what repugs would like---an opportunity to throw them all out.
