Japan nuclear crisis will last months: officials - I think it will be years

<snip>
Workers at a battered nuclear power plant in northeast Japan tried Sunday to stop radioactive water from pouring into the Pacific Ocean, while government officials admitted it will be months before the nuclear crisis is under control.

Radiation began leaking from the facility after a tsunami destroyed parts of Japan's northeastern coast on March 11, killing what is projected to be 25,000 people and halting key cooling systems that kept it from overheating.

Every day brings new issues at the plant, where workers have continually been forced to retreat because of high radiation levels.

"It would take a few months until we finally get things under control and have a better idea about the future," Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama on Sunday.

"We'll face a crucial turning point within the next few months, but that is not the end."

1. Given that it took three years to find out the exact state of the core at Three MIle Island,
I would say you are right.

4. People will have jobs dealing with remediation and monitoring for generations just
like Chernobyl and probably more thorough and expensive in modern Japan.

The lack of clear radiation data worries me as I look at various sources and am scientific and mathematic literate (but one slows with age and illness).

I tended to be more anti-nuke siting than anti-nuke; back in the 90s refused a subcontract as a vegetation ecologist / economist for an environmental consulting firm doing an EIS at Yucca Mountain.

Now hard core anti-nuke. I learn.

6. This guy has the data.
I just watched all of his video reports since mid-March, they are listed on the right side of page,
newest one at top, so I watched from top to bottom.
He explains what the different isotopes are, which ones are dangerous, why the most dangerous one cannot even be measured, so the workers have no idea of how exposed they are, what the difference is between sieverts and all those other funny sounding measurements, why this problem will take years to fix.
Very experienced guy who lays it out in easy to understand terms.
