2. How fortunate!
Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 08:48 PM by CJvR
How fortunate that they had filters that allowed them to vent radioactive gasses safely before they could build to dangerous levels...

Wait a minute!!!

Very good pictures, you get a real sense of the scale from the trucks on site.

5. Its interesting that buildings with the least amount of damage are the ones with bigger problems
Those would be buildings 1 and 2 on the left side of last picture. 3 is pretty much gone yet we do not hear much about it.

8. What a mess.
The tsunami trashed all all the equipment at the intakes then the hydrogen explosions trashed everything else.

I also see a lot of diesel fuel (I'm guessing) in the water.

That looks like mud around the buildings.

I'm speculating, but in hindsight there's probably things the plant operators might have done differently immediately following the earthquake and before the tsunami. Those multiple hydrogen explosions made things worse but we'd still be giving them hell if they'd been able to vent the stuff right away and prevented the explosions.

10. There are plenty of things...
...to give them hell for. The operators less so, they had to fight with what they had.

The plant itself seems to have stood up to the massive quake fairly well, but then everything went to hell - and this is what is so frustrating, totally needlessly!!!

Why, in the nation that gave the world the word tzunami, was the plant not secured from a tzunami? It is only on the shore just by one of the planet's major faultlines. Unlike a magnitude nine earthquake a tzunami is fairly easy to protect oneself from.

Why wasn't at least the emergency backup power secured from a tzunami? This is patheticly simple to do! Place them on the high ground and use underground wires to power the plant. There are high hills just behind the plant.

Who was the moron that placed the backup generator fuel tanks down by the shore? This is so stupid I hope it turns out to be wrong quite honestly.

Why was there no filters (pool and gravel) to relatively safely release pressure from radioactive gasses? It costs but not that much and gives the operators much better options in case of an emergency.

that everything is under control, despite the fact that Daiichi's reactor containment buildings look like European city after WWII.

To TEPCO a man who has been in the ground for two years is still a healthy adult.

16. Whatever comprised the tons of spent fuel rod pools in reactors 2 and 3
Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 09:38 PM by Urban Prairie
might now be spread out upon the floors of both.

Not to mention that many tons of the sausage sized spent fuel pellets may have lost or sustained damage to their zirconium casings, due to the explosions, or by corrosion from seawater, then spilling out enmasse all over inside the reactors, or maybe sinking/settling to the bottom of their pools in the other reactors that were not as damaged.

And it certainly looks like the two most damaged sure as hell appear that they are only getting sea/freshwater cooled by a "trickle-down" effect through all that debris, IMO.

18. Thanks for these
Just a note, the final picture is probably a much earlier shot than pictures one and 3 as the pump is not in place to the left of the reactor nor is the ground prepared for it.

Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 06:26 PM by originalpckelly

Oh wait, that's two NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CONTAINMENT BUILDINGS! There's a fucking nuclear reactor in those buildings! There were two spent fuel ponds!

And you know what? I think honestly there was more left of the Murrah building than those two buildings!
