Trace amounts of radiation from Japan detected at Crystal River plant

Miniscule amounts of radiation linked to Japan's nuclear emergency, first detected in Seattle and San Diego more than a week ago, have since been monitored in Denver, Boston and across much of Florida.

Progress Energy officials confirmed Monday that an air monitor at the company's Crystal River nuclear-power plant, about 85 miles west of Orlando, detected traces of iodine-131 on Thursday. The amount of radiation was many times lower than what health standards allow and less than natural levels associated with sunlight.

Also late last week, monitors at Florida Power & Light Co.'s nuclear plants near Fort Pierce and near Homestead also began to measure very small amounts of iodine-131. FPL spokesman Michael Waldron said the radiation peaked at less than half the intensity that must be reported to authorities and has been declining since.

Iodine-131 and cesium-137, which has been detected in Alaska and California, are among the products of nuclear fission and are generally associated with nuclear-power incidents like the ongoing struggle to regain control of reactors in Japan that were crippled by a magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami earlier this month.

6. Does anyone know how much radiation we were exposed to

back in the 40s 50s and 60s from all the testing that went on? I think most of ours were done underground but the USSR did theirs on the surface even the 100 megaton one.

7. Most of ours in the 50's and early 60's were above ground

and even the underground tests had a bit of venting, some as late as the 70's had a *lot* of venting.
