How are Americans exposed to Japanese radiation going to get proper healthcare?
The Japanese have a wonderful healthcare system, but what happens when our people come back? I hope Japan creates a fund and an obligation to provide for all who get sick through this.

1. Unless there is an immediate illlness caused by high exposure...
the most likely result is Cancer in twenty years or so.

6. Yes.
My friend is 18 miles from the reactors and has been helping deliver food and supplies to people in the area without protection.

I am wondering how he will fare when he comes back home. He is teaching there but I assume he will be back one day. Or knowing what may happen to him, maybe he has to prepare for a future in Japan.

4. You mean Americans in Japan? Americans within 100 miles of Fukushima?
Or are you just having a poke at all those "stupid liberals here on DU" again?

9. Yes my friend is 18 miles away from the plants.
I am wondering what is his future when he comes back home. Even if he doesn't get cancer I would think he needs more frequent checkups and has to be more sensitive than most to health insurance and costs.

benefit, for what it's worth, of knowing their risk and can hopefully act on that risk accordingly.

8. I cannot believe how many people are worried about getting sick here...
We aren't going to get enough radiation to make us sick here. Background radiation may get a smidge higher, but it is not going to make us sick like the people on the actual island where the disaster is happening. Please do some research on radiation. Once you have the knowledge of it, it is not very scary. We get more radiation when there is a sand storm in New Mexico than we are going to get from Japan. CALM DOWN.

10. I think he means Americans in Japan.
It's not all that clear, but at a guess I'd say that's what he's getting at.

And radiation has nothing to do with it.

12. The Navajo tribe and
the Downwinders in Washington have never received care (other than what people acquire for themselves) for the health problems they endure from our government's radioactive contamination. I imagine it will be the same for these people. The nuclear industry will be in charge - look what happened to the 9/11 people.

You would not believe the questionnaires used to filter out toxic exposure claims. Such as:
1. Do you wear mascara?
2. How many times a day do you walk by your laundry room?

They can always find another culprit that indroduces doubt as to the cause of anyone's cancer or other illnesses.
