9. ALEC supposedly stresses states' rights, but in fact this is primarily as a way to negate
any federal legislation that ALEC's corporate sponsors (who are also members) and rightwing state legislators dislike.

See my compilation topic on ALEC for more information:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x591230

This is everything from claiming the federal HCR bill is unconstitutional (with Blue Cross/Blue Shield among the corporations having input into that model legislation) to asserting that states have the right to use eminent domain to take federal lands.

And btw, ALEC is in favor of selling off government property. Including parks. As other replies in that compilation topic, and other replies on ALEC that I linked to, explain.

10. Federalism is a common conservative principle
It basically means states rights. Conservatives don't like giving too much power to central government and believe that the government closest to the people governs best because they are most accountable to the local voters.

It's why they always bring up the 10th Amendment.
It's why their lawyers belong to the "Federalist Society."
It's why states run by republicans are suing for the right to opt out of the healthcare law.

ALEC isn't new and it certainly shouldn't be mysterious. It would be the same as if the Federalist Society was providing the legal framework or talking points for some argument that conservatives were involved in around the country.

12. No, ALEC and the Federalist Society aren't at all the same thing.
The Federalist Society consists of law students, faculty and lawyers.

ALEC consists of legislators with the ability to introduce and pass legislation, and corporations that want certain legislation passed, and whose representatives help write that legislation.

It's a giant lobbying group in the guise of an "educational charity."

13. I didn't mean
they were the same thing only that they existed for the same reason. To promote right-wing policy in America.

16. The Federalists are not well liked by the majority of the legal Community. Alec uses their tact to
push things through and rationalize them.

18. There you have it. The country's policies are crafted by the corporations. The bills are not
generally written by congresspeople -- the ones whom we (again, generally) elect.

19. Hardly news that the country's policies are written by corprats
We do not elect anyone. They are chosen for us - first by corporate propaganda that puts them on the ballot and then by black-box corporate machines that count (or miscount) the votes. Don't be silly.
