Henry Rollins
Folks - I just saw Henry Rollins perform last night in Annapolis MD. This was his spoken word tour celebrating his 50th birthday.

If you have a chance - GO SEE HENRY ROLLINS! He spoke for 2 hours and I was hoping for more when it was done.

He talks of his world travels (North Korea, China, Uganda, Nepal etc) and the effects the beautiful people of the world have had on him. He also entertains you with stories of his early Black Flag days as well as general insights into life.

It was a mesmerizing show that showed (in my personal opinion) what a progressive person should strive to be. His tale of talking to an old man in Costco about ladders almost brought me to tears. His story of meeting former child soldiers in Uganda DID bring me to tears.

You will not be disappointed.

1. Go back and read descriptions of his black flag days from people outside of black flag..
He either matured since then or learned how to hide his inner asshole. I respect his views but don't really like the guy.

2. He just learned to hone his asshole.....
Having been someone that followed him from Black Flag on, he was definitely more of a narcissistic asshole back then. He slowly over the years developed a finely honed sense of self deprecation.

I still don't think he's a warm and fuzzy fellow or anything but I don't think he's all that much of an asshole any more. Either inner or outer. I could be wrong though.

6. There was a pivotal point in 1995 or so when I had a choice between
a black flag cd or a DGC rarities cd. My allowance would only pay for one and I chose the DGC rarities with Beck and Sonic youth and hole... blah blah blah. I've often thought that that moment was a defining moment where I decided my persona. It might sound trite but I really do believe that choice (that purchase) made me who I am today. Afterwards I read a lot of biographical stuff about Rollins beating up people back in the day and it only confirmed my choice.

4. People grow up.
He was a punk kid back then. A lot of those guys were stuck up pricks.

7. A lot of the people in the DC Hardcore scene were the nicest people I ever met. Back then,
Rollins spent his time preaching at everyone and being self-righteous.

15. I was generalizing...
he was totally a prick. I read his books, and he sort of admits as much in an indirect way. I grew up around people who were "too punk" for this person or that. They grew up to be weird squares. One just unfriended me for supporting choice on facebook. Weird, huh.

8. Assholes
There are a lot of assholes on this board (sometimes I am one as well) - that does not mean that they do not have good things to say.

The punk scene was loaded up with angry people - that is the nature of the music.

Anyway - we all have things in our past that people looking in from the outside would consider horrendous. Try looking at his works from today (charity and gatherer of knowledge) before condemning him on 3rd person accounts from a lifetime ago --- sort of a progressive way of looking it, if you will.

10. my friend was a big fan, met him at a show- HR picked up his grlfriend as thanks, had her try and
bum money to buy them dinner and drinks .... and dumped the now ex GF on the curb the next morning. Probably a common rock and roll story. and I was never a big fan, but my friend had been. Ha, not after that though.

3. I really enjoy is spoken word stuff. He's really matured over the years into
and channeled his righteous anger into positive results. And he's really funny and *now*, rather self effacing.

14. Saw him at a West Memphis Three benefit a few years ago. Keith Morris opened the show

doing some of his BF and Circle Jerks songs. Then Rollins came out and did a bunch of BF songs and some of his newer material. Probably one of the best punk shows I have ever seen. I've been following Rollins since the mid '90's and I've never known him to be an asshole, but I've seen some of his early BF interviews and stuff and he did seem kinda jerkish then. And he talks about his process of maturing in his books and spoken word shows.

Honestly, I was a narcissistic dick too when I was a teenage punk. So I really identify with his stories about overcoming that and growing as a person.

The show he had on HBO for a while was great as well. My favorite segment was "letters from Henry".

9. I saw him in the mid-90's at a WHSF-Festival -
if you're from Annapolis you'll remember that station (I lived in Northern Virginia at the time). If I remember right he was the one spinning around on stage. Does he still do that? I don't know anything about him personally but the music was good and it was a fun show.

13. For the most part...
...he only does spoken word shows these days.

And yes...I do remember HFS - I even dated one of the DJs (Neeci was her name). OK...dated is a strong word - we had drinks several times.
