Republicans refused to allow a SS payroll cut holiday for more than one year.
So in that case we all probably needn't worry it will be renewed. If the Democrats hate it as much as people here and the Republicans didn't really want it then what is the worry?

2. If they loved it why wouldn't they have done it for two years?

Payroll taxes are regressive and in decent times funds the federal government.

3. To make us fight for their goal or to use as a midstream issue
We aren't three years old. They've been pushing this "solution" for decades. It is no sense pretending they are opposed now.

6. The economists say the more efficient tax holiday wound have been one for the employers.

That is the one I can see Republicans loving.

But Repubicans know that getting rid of Social Security is very unpopular. They won't prevent it's funding unless they can get rid of it.

And are we forgetting it was Ronald Reagan who engineered the social security surplus and increased payroll taxes?

10. Reagan 'engineered' it?
Reagan robbed SS to give tax cuts, he called it 'forgivable debt'.

You are flat out pushing GOP memes now.

15. Did he really call the SS surplus a forgivable debt?
Okay this is the first I've heard of this.

7. They want to use it as an election issue for 2012.
Two years would have pushed it beyond the election.

9. Two years means you run on the issue. One year expires it prior to.

11. There will be another one year extension.
Which they will fight for. And everyone will be afraid to vote against. And then a permanent extension in the election year. We will find out soon enough.

4. Nice point on the deficit in the article ....
"There is also one big unknown looming over the whole debate: the deficit. This week’s deal, of course, will worsen the deficit. In the short run, many economists believe a larger deficit is better than the alternative. As Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, said during a recent “60 Minutes” interview, “We don’t want to take actions this year that will affect this year’s spending and this year’s taxes in a way that will hurt the recovery.”

5. As much as a larger deficit pains me I have come to realize this as well.
I am torn.

8. I could live without the SS payroll tax cut.
I can live without the money. But the thing that really bothers me is what the impact upon my neighbors that rely on SS to live will be.
