CNN reports radioactivity reached our west coast
Is there any radiactivity level or locational info?

3. The level IS much lower by orders of magnitude
than the x-ray I got on my foot, to put it in perspective. What worries me is not the radiation perse... but particles.

Watch what they do, not what they say. I will be officially freaked when I see yellow duckie brigades... (which I expect if we should get a large enough particles in a particular zone)

You still have time to get your tetrapack milk. I got mine and also for my nephews today... that trunk has a few cases. That means mik for a few months.

so I better protect the kid's thyroids...

(I suspect they don't have the extra funds either so the rice and milk are on me)

9. That's what I've been thinking.
It sucks to be you if you're in Japan, but the radiation levels that make it to the U.S. are detectable, but Mostly Harmless (depending on your definition of "Mostly"...)

10. It is the particles that make it through that could be a problem
especially with milk and cows. And that would be limited to where we get "hot zones" and I use " for one reason, what we would define as hot, aka where it will go into the food chain, will be that much lower, by orders of magnitude... but enough to concentrate in milk supplies.

19. somebody told me that milk
from cows who don't eat grass in the open is OK. I don't know anything about cows. What else do they eat--stored feeds? But how would we know the diff? And consumer protection is such a low priority in this country.

I imagine we'll be hearing a lot of conflicting info on this.

Or is it everyone.

Cesium is bad for everyone, not just the young, wonder if milk is a pathway for that as well

and yes it bio accumulates in cows milk.

They do not want a panic, but worst case scenario some of our cows will not be happy. No not sick, not to that level... just not selling very well

33. don't think you mean particles
I mean particles could harm you. There are diseases cause by particle ingestion. What you are worried about is radioactive particles concentrating up the food chain and then into you. The worse radioactive particle I131 has a pretty short lifetime. However thyroid cancer in known to be a result of concentration up the food chain and into you. About 40000 to 200000 people got thyroid cancer due to above ground testing in 50-60s. It is well known to be elevated around Chernobyl. It is claimed to be elevated around US nuclear power plants. Is the amount enough to "really" worry about. The amount of radioactive elements getting to the US is rather small. You have some radioactive elements in you already. Some caused by say Chernobyl or above ground testing. The amount of radioactive material getting to US is unlikely to cause an measurable increase in thyroid cancer rate. However it is impossible to tell someone that does get it, it wasn't due to Japanese radiation. "You can dust for vomit". Now if you were in Japan and had small children... I'd be more worried. If you are worried the best thing to do is skip dairy for a while. While it is unlikely to help you, stress can hurt you just as bad. If being proactive gives you peace of mind you might as do something that might help you a tiny, tiny amount. :)

36. As I said the level means
we are getting our annual dose in 365 days, 12 hours, all the way to the last second of the year... and even that might be an over statement.

It is the food chain and the off chance of particles...

As to milk... depends how fast they stop it, et al... suffice it to say months is the current window.

talking points, it will be ridiculously low (and for the first time, they will be right)

Of course the particles (which I am hoping fall down from the sky) are a concern

21. They are still very, very low
This is less than my foot x-ray by orders.

Here is what matters though, even though they are ridiculously slightly over background... TIME of exposure. But this rate, a yearly rate would be achieved in 364 days... with a few hours, close to 23 hours. and many minutes.

As I said, for once they will be right on that talking point.

Here these guys have a non sciency technical on this

24. Personally I like to stay under that limit
and I've had too much radiation already for comfort.

Isn't there a difference between the isotopes in fallout and the isotopes in a medical xray?

I've read that these are smaller, including the plutonium, and this makes it easier for them to travel and harder for the body to get rid of ... not that I'm paranoid or anything!

27. That is the problem
the background radiation is just that, radiation. The isotopes are a whole different story and though low.. most will wash out into the pacific... they COULD have an effect with the food chain.

Think of this the following way. The radiation is wind, the particles are dust.

32. Particles will no doubt fall into the Pacific. I heard a woman say that you shouldn't
eat bottom feeders like oysters because the particles will settle. And also the bigger the fish the more radiation it will end up with as it eats smaller fish who in turn eat smaller fish and so on, so it is accumulated.

Basically, I would stay off fish.

radiation may have reached the us, but at least per this, levels aren't yet any different from average levels a week ago. i've been checking it regularly & here's screen shot du-er posted:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=653115&mesg_id=653115

looks like he removed (?) the screenshot but i noted the readings in it on a post & will try to find it. range for vancouver bc, washington & sf california was something like 17-37. the site in eastern washington is in the neighborhood of the hanford plant.

readings in denver & ny have typically been higher than anything on the w. coast.
