Koch Industries Employs PR Firm To Airbrush Wikipedia, Gets Banned For Unethical ‘Sock Puppets’
The corporate propaganda machine manipulating social media? Not too long ago, we had Republicans running ads in Nevada attacking Harry Reid from the "left" urging latinos not to vote to punish Democrats for not passing immigration reform. Of course, Latinos for reform turned out to be a right wing sock puppet.

When you see so called liberals attacking Democrats, President Obama, etc., but giving even more extreme Republicans a free pass, you have to wonder whether we are being set up.

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/09/koch-wikipedia-sock... /

Last year, Koch Industries began employing New Media Strategies (NMS), an Internet PR firm that specializes in “word-of-mouth marketing” for major corporations including Coca-Cola, Burger King, AT&T, Dodge and Ford. It appears that, ever since the NMS contract was inked with Koch, an NMS employee began editing the Wikipedia page for “Charles Koch,” “David Koch,” “Political activities of the Koch family,” and “The Science of Success” (a book written by Charles). Under the moniker of “MBMAdmirer,” NMS employees edited Wikipedia articles to distance the Koch family from the Tea Party movement, to provide baseless comparisons between Koch and conspiracy theories surrounding George Soros, and to generally delete citations to liberal news outlets. After administrators flagged the MBMAdmirer account as a “sock puppet” — one of many fake accounts used to manipulate new media sites — a subsequent sock puppet investigation found that MBMAdmirer is connected to a number of dummy accounts and ones owned by NMS employees like Jeff Taylor.

Soren Dayton, a GOP operative and executive at New Media Strategies, is reported to be the contact for Koch Industries at NMS. Reached by phone yesterday by ThinkProgress, Dayton exclaimed, “I’m not going to talk about this, thanks,” before hanging up. Lyndsey Medsker, a senior account director for NMS, spoke to ThinkProgress today. She explained that NMS also maintains the Koch Industries Twitter page, Facebook page, and has an active team working on promoting Koch Industries in the comment section of blogs and news websites.

As ThinkProgress has reported, the billionaire Koch brothers maintain contracts with over a dozen public relation firms and lobbying firms. Pushing back again recent scrutiny, the brothers have also relied on a conservative media infrastructure owned by the Koch brothers or closely linked to them by way of their donor conferences. We have documented how the Koch message machine has targeted ThinkProgress and even placed hit-pieces against a New Yorker journalist investigated the Kochs. But now it seems the Koch brothers are at work manipulating Wikipedia to polish their image.

1. Unrec for the passive-aggressive accusation that liberals who criticize Obama are Koch stooges.
I have no doubt that the wealthy elite use this tactic. But that doesn't mean that the vast majority of liberal criticism isn't coming from real liberals. This kind of insulting behavior doesn't help anyone--not Obama, and not the overall liberal movement. In fact, some might claim that the opposite is true: that the most effective way to break up the liberal power structure would be to pay people to accuse their fellow liberals of being Koch stooges, thereby sowing the seeds of paranoia, suspicion, and resentment within the larger community until we're so busy eating our own visionaries that we end up politically neutralizing *ourselves*.

But hey, that's just a theory, right?

15. could it be that some attackers fail to ever show concern about what Republicans have been doing-
therefore promoting the meme that it doesn;t matter - both parties are exactly the same?
their lack of balance in their concerns is always troubling, and sometimes suspicious.
If you are actaully passionate about an issue, it's disengenuos to give the Republican party a pass. Why would anyone want to?

30. on "Democratic U" we're supposed to waste our time attacking Rs?
Where's any support for Rs around here that we're supposed to counter? I'd suggest that energy for attacking Rs would be better spent in the "comments" section of your local newspaper. Every local I look at around my area seems to have a sizable cadre of Tea Party types who have endless time to peruse every piece and over-whelm any possible progressive voice with their Fox talking points.

Nothing "passive-aggressive" about that statement. Nor, did the OP say anything about people with legitimate criticisms of the President.

17. Try turning your statement around.
When you heap scorn on Republicans but ignore the shitty actions of prominent Democrats, then you're giving THEM a "free pass" to do whatever they hell they want to do in Washington without any checks or balances.

I'm cool with assigning blame to all parties who vote for, support, defend, or rationalize shitty legislative behavior. But this works both ways. Republicans need to be given hell, and Democrats ALSO need to be given hell when they choose to ACT like Republicans.

19. No one here has done that. those who were pissed at BushCo and friends for their
corruption are equally pissed when Democrats pull the same shit. We're constant in defending traditional Democratic positions on the issues. Fanboys and girls blow with the winds, adopting corrupt GOP positions if a personality with a (D) following their name supports them.

not the majority, of course. But it exists here as it does at Wiki There's no doubt in my mind and some have gotten away with trolling for years.
Im not thrillled w Obama myself, but it;s not hard for me to communicate the bigger picture, how Republicans have ravaged our economy, etc.... when I bitch about him. A lot of posts here morror faux talking points, as if the president is the one who steered us into the ditch. Frankly, I have to say that;s bullshit.

25. HuffPo - "GOP-Linked 'Latinos For Reform' Airs Nevada Ads Urging Hispanics Not To Vote" - The Truth!
There is a huge cover-up of the Republican and Corporate media efforts to turn the left against the Democrats. Yet, there are those who deny it. Are these denials sincere or part of the cover-up? No matter, the corporate manipulation of the left is real. Here is a Huff Po story exposing "Latinos for Reform," which turned out to be a sock puppet:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/19/latinos-for-re...

A third-party group headed by a GOP operative is out with a new Nevada ad spot encouraging Latinos in the state not to cast votes in this year's midterm elections.

Robert de Posada, president of Latinos for Reform and a prominent conservative operative and political analyst for Univision, has commissioned the ads in what he describes as a response to Hispanic resentment over the failure of Washington to address immigration reform despite repeated promises.

Perhaps DU could contact Wiki and find out how wiki conducted their investigation. We'd all be better off if they could do a housecleaning here.

21. Is it true? Probably.
Does it change the FACT that I'm not seeing my interests represented in DC? Definitively NOT. The complaints I have are real. You would silence my dissent because it serves their interests? I don't think so. Really. If we keep agitating for what is RIGHT, rather than what is EXPEDIENT, maybe change can come. Otherwise, bend over for more of the same, and remember to say thank you.

On the other hand, when we have a president who is this far to the right

there is no question but that much of the criticism of him and challenges

to him are going to be 90% on the dime! Especially here at DU!

Questioning Obama is full time activity here at DU because it is essential --

and demanded if we are going to work out way out of this corporate triangulation

we're being subjected to !!

for a while now. Kos had an article in the last month or so about the growing biz of paying people to troll and disrupt lefty web sites with prescripted reichwing talking points.

HuffPo has become so infested with paid trolls that it is barely readable any more, and it has all happened in the last six months.
