I just got almost $4K in tax refunds. 10% of it will go to relief for Japan.

I have a lot going on with my health and my home projects, but I can make the sacrifice.

Who's with me?

A little more detail in case anyone cares: I recently figured out (with no help from my doctor) that I have hyperparathyroidism. Last week at the recommendation of my aunt (who along with my mom also had it) I got a DEXA bone scan and flunked it. I have osteoporosis of the spine, osteopenia of the pelvis, at age 53.

The good news is that the parathyroid thing can be cured surgically, and there is a facility in Tampa, FL that does advanced minimally invasive surgery. The bone loss is probably reversible, but only after I get the underlying problem fixed.

It's going to cost me up to several thousand dollars, much of it out of my own pocket, but I have to get it fixed.

1. I would if I were receiving a refund.
Sorry, can't do because I usually have to pay about $800 at income tax time. You are a lucky person receiving that much back.

4. It's more a result of poor tax planning than "luck"

I prefer to have to write two checks at tax time rather than allow Uncle Sam and my state to borrow money from me interest-free for a year.

Maybe it's some kind of message from the fates, having the quake hit and the money deposited into my account within 24 hours of each other.

7. Good for you Slackmaster
I do enjoy receiving my taxes also. Yes, I can donate some money. Why do people get upset when we receive money back? This is the way I prefer to do things Why bash? I thought DU was all about freedom.

8. I'm getting a photovoltaic power system installed on my house in a couple of months
That's going to get me a federal tax credit of over $5K, so I was able to cut down on my federal withholding for the year.

If my medical exceeds about $6K (and it might), I could see some tax relief from that as well.

It's not cheap being me.
