The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors in first place. In 2009 the UK and France sold €687,399 of "Chemical or biological toxic agents, riot control agents, radioactive materials, related equipment, components and material". In 2011, the US government was going to sell Gaddafi $77Million of Military Hardware. The deal was quietly scuttled right before the revolution started (Also see "Briefing and Major Arms Sale, State Dept Briefing on Oct 2010)

On other alarming news, on March 9 the Sydney Morning Herald reported Nerve Gas used on protesters in Yemen. Will we hear a word about that?

Al Arabiya is a compromised news source due to recent orders from the House of Saud, along with huge bribes, to take a pro-Gaddafi line. They've been caught several times in the last 2 weeks. Sadly, anything they report needs to be doublechecked now.

U.S. sends mixed signals on U.N. backing for Libya no-fly zone
By Tom Cohen, CNN
March 10, 2011 -- Updated 0033 GMT (0833 HKT)

Washington (CNN) -- The Obama administration sent mixed signals Wednesday on its stance on a no-fly zone in Libya, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying U.N. backing was essential while White House spokesman Jay Carney left the door open to the United States acting unilaterally or in concert with NATO allies.

...

Carney and other administration officials contend the United States already has moved quickly in the crisis by freezing $30 billion in U.S. assets of Gadhafi, supporting further U.N. sanctions on Libya and sending military aircraft to help transport foreign nationals who fled the fighting there.

At the same time, top U.S. defense officials including Defense Secretary Robert Gates warn that imposing such a no-fly zone amounts to an act of war that requires major resources and political will.

On Wednesday, Carney reiterated the White House stance that all options remain on the table regarding Libya, and he specified that a possible no-fly zone was being actively discussed by both the United States and NATO.

11. Int'l. Red Cross: Libya in civil war, civilians bearing brunt of violence
From The Guardian's News Blog:

10.27am:

Libya is in a civil war, according to the International committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which says it has seen increasing numbers of wounded civilians arriving in hospitals in Ajdabiya and Misrata

ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger said in Misrata 40 patients were treated for serious injuries and 22 dead were taken there. He said the Red Cross surgical team in Ajdabiya operated on 55 wounded this past week and "civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence".

He also called on Libyan authorities to grant the humanitarian agency access to western areas including the capital Tripoli and reminded both sides that civilians and medical facilities must not be targeted. Kellenberger told a news conference:

"We have now a non-international armed conflict, or what you would call civil war. We see increasing numbers of wounded arriving at hospitals in the east and we are extremely worried."

Andrew's trip to Yemen was followed by arms deal
By Andy McSmith

Thursday, 10 March 2011

Prince Andrew meets the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on his recent visit

The Government licensed the sale of £160,000 worth of bullets and body armour to the Yemeni government after Prince Andrew met the country's Prime Minister for trade talks.

It was the Duke of York's third meeting in quick succession with leaders of the small Arab republic, which has been ruled with an iron hand for more than 20 years by President Ali Abdullah Saleh, but is now experiencing the wave of popular protest sweeping the Middle East.

...

Prince Andrew held three meetings with Yemeni leaders between September 2009 and January 2010, all on the pretext of boosting British exports. The records of the Export Control Organisation, the body which regulates arms sales overseas, show that during the first quarter of 2010 – just after the prince's third meeting – licences were granted for the sale of £160,245 worth of bullets and body armour to the Yemenis.

...

Further criticism is likely after it emerged that, as recently as Monday this week, he has been lobbying an MP to help boost trade with Azerbaijan, a nation accused of torturing protestors.

13. The Guardian: Opposition replacing untrained volunteers with experienced veterans
From The Guardian's News Blog:

10.48am:

The Guardian's Chris McGreal, in Benghazi says there has been a shake-up in the opposition forces amid the bombardment by Gaddafi's forces of other rebel-held territory in recent days.

The rebels seem to be becoming better organised militarily. They've now got a new experienced leader, Omar Hariri. He used to be one of Gaddafi's officers, in fact was part of the coup that brought him to power 40 years ago. They're digging in their defences around Ras Lanuf, strengthening them. It's not clear whether that means they're intending, for now, to simply sit there and try and resist Gaddafi's forces if they now turn their intentions east once they are dealt with Zawiyah, if they have indeed dealt with Zawiyah, that situation remains unclear or whether the rebels intend to continue to advance towards Tripoli...

One of the things that has happened is that the military leadership is clearing out all of the hundreds upon hundreds of young men who simply grabbed weapons in Benghazi and around from military bases and headed towards the front to fight. They have been very poorly disciplined, they have no experience, they have shot at the slightest provocation and they have become a danger to themselves, and to the rebel cause in some way. They are now being replaced by more experienced soldiers, people who have served with Gaddafi's army, in an effort to give some coordination and discipline.

Via The Guardian's News Blog:

10.59am:

Opposition forces on the main front line between the Mediterranean oil port of Ras Lanouf and the city of Bin Jawwad, appear to have established better supply lines, bringing heavy weapons like multiple-rocket launcher trucks and small tanks to the battle, Reuters reports.

Youssef Fittori, a major in the opposition force, said a mix of defectors from Gadhafi's special forces and civilain rebels were fighting government forces about 12 miles west of Ras Lanouf on the main coastal road to Bin Jawwad.

"Today, God willing, we will take Bin Jawwad. We are moving forward," he said.

Mohammed Omar al-Mukhtar

Benghazi, LIBYA (AFP)
The son of Libya's first revolutionary can barely remember his freedom-fighter father, hanged 80 years ago by the Italians, but he has no doubt that today's rebels will prevail.

"They should hold themselves up and fill themselves with courage. God shall support them and give them victory," says 90-year-old Mohammed Omar al-Mukhtar, sitting slightly stooped in a black cloak, white scarf and red hat.

His father's 20-year guerrilla war against Italian colonial rulers made him a national hero, inspired generations of Libyans and was immortalized by Oscar-winning actor Anthony Quinn in the 1981 film "Lion of the Desert".

So powerful is his legacy, Mohammed said it was important for Muammer Gaddafi to declare the start of his revolution from Mukhtar's tomb.

Guardian correspondent missing in Libya
Ghaith Abdul-Ahad was last heard from on outskirts of Zawiya

Ian Black, Middle East editor
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 10 March 2011 11.27 GMT

Ghaith Abdul-Ahad has been reporting from western Libya for the past two weeks. Photograph: Martin Argles for the Guardian

...

Abdul-Ahad entered the country from Tunisia and was last in touch with the paper through a third party on Sunday, when he was on the outskirts of Zawiya, a town west of the capital, Tripoli, which has seen fierce fighting in the past few days.

...

Abdul-Ahad, who is an Iraqi national, is a highly respected staff correspondent who has written for the Guardian since 2004. He has spent long periods in Somalia, Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan, reporting on the stories of ordinary people and their suffering in times of conflict.

He has won many of the most prestigious awards available to foreign correspondents, including Foreign Reporter of the Year at the British Press Awards, the James Cameron award and the Martha Gellhorn prize. He was shortlisted in February in the Foreign Reporter of the Year category at this year's UK Press Awards.

Abdul-Ahad was travelling with Andrei Netto of the Brazilian newspaper Estado, who is also missing.

“For over a week now, the newspaper has lost all contact with correspondent Andrei Netto, who was stationed on the west of Libya covering the latest clashes between the rebels and Gaddafi’s forces,” the “Estado” says, adding that according to “unverified information, Netto could be imprisoned by the government along with another journalist and a Libya guide who was assisting them on site.”

Up until last Sunday, the newspaper was receiving indirect information, assuring that the reporter was OK, and was hiding in the Zawiya region, 30 km away from Tripoli.

Direct communications, such as telephone calls and emails had been suspended “for security reasons,” Libyan sources assured.

However, recent information suggests that Netto has been imprisoned in the Zawiya region.
Tripoli has yet to confirm his official detention.

I must be desensitized but I didn't think that was graphic. Just dead mercenaries neatly lined up on the ground. None of them had the horrific wounds they've been inflicting on the Libya people.

No kidding. Already shot down several pilots with Syrian identification papers.

Meanwhile in the February edition of Vogue Magazine

Asma al-Assad: A Rose in the Desert
by Joan Juliet Buck | photographed by James Nachtwey

Asma al-Assad is glamorous, young, and very chic—the freshest and most magnetic of first ladies. Her style is not the couture-and-bling dazzle of Middle Eastern power but a deliberate lack of adornment. She’s a rare combination: a thin, long-limbed beauty with a trained analytic mind who dresses with cunning understatement. Paris Match calls her “the element of light in a country full of shadow zones.” She is the first lady of Syria.

...

The presidential family lives surrounded by neighbors in a modern apartment in Malki. On Friday, the Muslim day of rest, Asma al-Assad opens the door herself in jeans and old suede stiletto boots, hair in a ponytail, the word happiness spelled out across the back of her T-shirt. At the bottom of the stairs stands the off-duty president in jeans—tall, long-necked, blue-eyed. A precise man who takes photographs and talks lovingly about his first computer, he says he was attracted to studying eye surgery “because it’s very precise, it’s almost never an emergency, and there is very little blood.”

...

Brass bells are handed out. Now we’re all singing “Jingle Bell Rock,” 1,331 audience members shaking their bells, singing, crying, and laughing.

“This is the diversity you want to see in the Middle East,” says the president, ringing his bell. “This is how you can have peace!”
