Does anyone know what their political leanings are of those being recalled?

While the political fate of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez and County Commissioner Natacha Seijas in the March 15 recall elections is uncertain, one thing is increasingly clear: Voters aren’t staying on the sidelines.

Turnout in special elections is typically much lower than in general elections. Yet, after one week of early voting, the recall question is generating nearly as much turnout as last November’s general election, which included hot races for Florida governor and U.S. senator.

Speculation that the protracted run-up to the recall vote would zap public interest in the issue is proving wrong.

5. Only references I could find is that she's nonpartisan.

Apparently she joined with the mayor who is about to get recalled to and raised property taxes by 20%. That seems like a bit of a steep increase but I don't know the smaller details.

6. Races for local offices in Florida are non-partisan
At least up here in Leon County, I think across the state. Since many people still voted Democratic, the REpubs got this passed to keep people from voting by party when in doubt. It sucks since the Repubs lie until the election, then start playing by the party taking points once they are in offic.

11. That is mostly because of the 2004 hurricane season
Florida was hit by four hurricanes: Hurricane Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne, all of which were serious and caused lots of damage.

Then along came 2005 with its record breaking hurricane season and more hits on Florida as well as the southeast and any attempt to keep the insurance rates down went out the window. The companies that did not jack up their rates left the state.

3. We just had a GOP attempt to recall a Dem Mayor here in Omaha
The recall failed. It was to have been a union-busting effort.

10. I'm trying to google up what I can on Alvarez
It seems that he was formerly the Miami-Dade Police Director and had a reputation as a corruption fighter, especially with reference to a food contracting scandal at the Miami Airport. But as mayor and under current economic conditions, he's just pissing people off.

On the other hand, Miami being Miami, the whole thing is neck deep in local politics and special interests, which makes it really hard for us outsiders to know what is actually at stake.

http://thestrawbuyer.blogspot.com/2010/05/mortgage-fraud-arrests.html

While economies around the world are collapsing and our very own Miami Dade County is on the verge of insolvency, our esteemed Mayor, Carlos Alvarez is out shopping for a new BMW with mostly tax payers money and even better, using county money and manpower to put out bids for the car even though its for his OWN PERSONAL USE! BRILLIANT! Didn't the Mayor already have a new BMW? This latest debacle should have Miami Dade county residents so pissed off that they'll be spitting nails.

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2010/09/norman_bramans_recall_real_fis.php

We've never hidden our disappointment and disgust with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez's administration. Voters handed him immense powers in 2007, but Carlos "El Fuerte" never materialized. And he sandbagged Miami-Dade taxpayers with the Marlins deal and most recently, his successful push to increase property taxes. The latter allegedly the motivation behind billionaire car dealer Norman Braman's recently announced campaign to recall Alvarez.

Well we found Norman's timing a bit suspect.

For one thing, a recall effort against the county mayor fizzled. Braman was nowhere near that one and there was plenty of reason to be pissed at Alvarez. But we do know the auto magnate lost in court against the county and the Florida Marlins. And it is no secret he supported Tomas Regalado for Miami mayor last year. Maybe Braman and Regalado got together to get some payback against a lame duck mayor.

At least that's the theory over at the blog, Take Back Miami, which also notes Braman hasn't locked his deep-pocketed sights on county commissioners who voted for the tax hike like Natacha Seijas, who happens to be tight with lobbyist Armando Guiterrez, who is close pals with Regalado.
