Beyoncé Says She Donated Qaddafi Money to Haiti'The decision was made to put that payment to a good cause,'

MARCH 2, 2011 4:25 PM ET
On Monday, several prominent music-business sources told Rolling Stone that Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Usher, 50 Cent and others who've performed shows funded by Libyan leaders should donate their fees to charity. As it turns out, Beyoncé already did. According to her publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, the singer put all her earnings toward Haiti earthquake-relief efforts "over a year ago." "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family," a statement explained, "the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."

Beyoncé performed five songs in a black leotard at a private New Year's Eve 2009 party for Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi's son, Muatassim, who is the country's national security adviser. Muatassim Qaddafi is the brother of Seif al-Islam Qaddafi, who recently warned Libyan protesters on state television to abandon the streets or face "rivers of blood." Qaddafi's security forces — who U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently called "mercenaries and thugs" — have been firing on peaceful protesters for days.

Over the past few years, Muatassim Qaddafi has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring prominent western performers to provide music for his private events. In 2008, Mariah Carey accepted a $1 million fee, according to WikiLeaks cables and news reports, to sing four songs for a New Year's Eve party. 50 Cent has performed at Qaddafi functions in the past. Beyoncé was the main attraction at the New Year's Even party, which took place on at Nikki Beach, on the Caribbean island of St. Bart's party. Usher, according to reports, also performed there, and Lindsay Lohan, Jay-Z, Jon Bon Jovi and other celebrities were in the audience.

On Monday, Nelly Furtado promised to give away the money she earned for a similar appearance, tweeting: "In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 min. Show for guests at a hotel in Italy. I am going to donate the $." Furtado was unavailable for further comment. Management reps for 50 Cent, Carey and Usher refused comment as well.

Translated: Captured soldier from Al Brega battle today

VIDEO

Translated by Libyafeb17.com

Interviewer: You are part of…
Soldier: *broken sound* …. foot soldiers
Interviewer: Which base?
Soldier: Safsaf in Sirt
Interviewer: Where is it’s base?
Soldier: Sirt
Interviewer: Who is it’s commander?
Soldier: Mabrook Al Forjani
Interviewer: From Sirt?
Soldier: From Sirt yes
Interviewer: Tell us about your brigade’s movements
Soldier: I will tell you about its movement in from the beginning when I arrived at the checkpoint in Raas Lanuf. From there the officer asked me for my ID and I gave it to him. They took us to the scouting camp there, the Abu Hdem camp. We arrived at the camp and they gave us our clothes. I wore my clothes and from there they brought us to Brega today. We passed Bishr, Al Agela and we arrived at Al Brega. We were approximately 30 or 40 cars. The cars were equipped with machine guys, Anti-aircraft machine guns, A Hauser (M60 Machine gun), A quad machine gun (?) and RPGs. We were in total 300 to 400 soldiers. All armed with heavy weaponary.
Interviewer: Alright..
Soldier: When we arrived at Brega, they started shooting. Shooting right, shooting left, right, left.
Interviewer: When did you leave the battalion base exactly?
Soldier: We left at around…6 in the morning
Interviewer: 6am
Soldier: 6am yeah, it was still a little dark
Interviewer: Right. And you came from Sirt towards the east
Soldier: correct
Interviewer: And you passed Bin Jwad and Ras Lanuf
Soldier: correct, we passed Bin Jwad and Ras Lanuf
Interviewer: Right, and what was there in Ras Lanuf exactly? Is it true that there’s a battalion there?
Soldier: There is a scouting battalion there yes.
Interviewer: Your total count was 400?
Soldier: Our number is in the region of 400 yes
Interviewer: What arms and weaponry

Soldier: The honest fact of the matter is that they gathered us yesterday and told us you are going to Brega
Interviewer: They gathered you?
Soldier: Yeah, they told us at x hour, you will be going to Brega. Get into the cars, get into the cars, we found ourselves in Brega.
Interviewer: get into the cars, get into the cars….did they take you from your houses or…
Soldier: No, from the barracks.
Interviewer: You were in the barracks right
Soldier: I have told you my story from the very beginning. We were soldiers on reserve. They told us to get into the cars, we wore our gear and were taken to Brega.
Interviewer: On what basis?
Soldier: On the basis that we were going to make base there or clean it or something..
Interviewer: What do you mean clean it? You guys were coming here to clean Brega?
Soldier: Yeah, we were coming here to clean Al Brega
Interviewer: Clean it from what?
Soldier: They said people were coming to live in Brega
Interviewer: To clean means to kill? Or does to clean meaning remove the wrappers and dirt?
Soldier: Clean meaning to sweep it so they can control it
Interviewer: Meaning whoever is in front of you kill them
Soldier: Whoever is in front of us…I won’t lie to you….they told us we were going to do some military cleaning..
Interviewer: I am sure that you understand military language. Cleaning…what does that mean?
Soldier: It means whoever attacks you with bullets…shoot them with bullets
Interviewer: Right, carry on
Soldier: And this is what God taught me
Soldier: I tell you that my county is Ajdabya. Let me explain to you my reality. My county is Ajdabya… and it remains my county and whatever happens in the end, may God be with them (meaning: in the end, I will side with my people. Gaddafi can go to hell). And if I were to be tried, I’d be going to the cells there with the other military personnel. I can stay and jump with the army, I can stay with them. But I want to get away because I am walking with the truth.
Soldier: I can tell you about it but earlier I saw a plane, you get me? I saw a plane but did it fire or not I didn’t see it do that with my eyes.
Interviewer: What is your rank?
Soldier: I have no rank
Interviewer: You have no rank..right.
Soldier: Their guns were aimed at any car. A Toyota or whatever, they would fire at it with machine guns and 106 and the light rifles. Anything that is on top of the car they would fire at as well, and this I saw with my own eyes.
Interviewer: In exchange, what did they give you in exchange to do this?
Soldier: As for something in exchange I swear I saw none of that. They didn’t give me anything. Not a dime.
Soldier: What else can I tell you, I swear I don’t know anything. I am a soldier, they held me against my will, they took me and brought me.
Interviewer: Against your will? Where is your family? Where are you brothers?
Soldier: My mother still lives in Ajdabiya, my siblings are still in Ajdabiya and my county is Ajdabiya.
Soldier: O Muslim youth, a piece of advice for the sake of God and none else. Any person who is defending something unlawful or false, then distance yourself from the problems. You are all brothers and..
Interviewer: We want you to be clear
Soldier: Right
Interviewer: Say I came here and found fire facing me.
Soldier: I came and found a firey resistance impossible to defeat, and when I fell I found mercy and people who treated me kindly. All praise be to God!
Crowd: God is Greater!
Interviewer: Your colleagues, did they run away or not?
Soldier: They ran away
Interviewer: Did they leave you or not?
Soldier: I testify in front of God that they left me

Libya's uncertain front lines
In the desert to the west of Benghazi, armed but outgunned opposition troops stand ready to guard vital oil facilities.
Evan Hill Last Modified: 02 Mar 2011 05:37 GMT

Thousands of young men have reportedly signed up and begun training for the uprising’s new army

Ajdabiya, Libya - On Monday afternoon, Libyan military jets reportedly bombed a weapons depot somewhere near the opposition-held town of Ajdabiya, a little more than 160km south of Benghazi, the stable heart of the uprising in this country.

At a checkpoint on the outskirts of town, with several plumes of smoke rising in different directions along the flat, desert horizon, agitated rebels scurried around confiscated anti-aircraft guns, brandishing pistols and AK-47 assault rifles.

One man, his face strained with emotion, yelled that “many” had been killed in the air strike inside Ajdabiya itself. Others sped down the road away from town, saying the planes had hit the depot. Still more pointed to a plume of smoke to the north and claimed al-Zuwatina, a nearby oil field, had been attacked.

Inside the town, residents said there had been no air strike. Later, rebel officers in Benghazi claimed their anti-aircraft fire had scared off incoming jets. Reporters who visited the Ajdabiya depot described a large crater in the dirt; either the fighter pilots were terrible shots, or they had intended to miss their target.

41. I used to own the Green Book.
A friend in the Nation of Islam gave it to me. It was rather bland stuff. What struck me most was the patriarchy with an essentialist feminist cover - "women are different, and so must be protected." It wasn't very bold, but contained highfalutin references to the "rule of the masses" that reminded me a bit of Kim il Sung, yet written in a less mechanical fashion. I doubt these books being burned had been read in a long time.

Hillary Clinton Says Al Jazeera Is Putting American Media To Shame
Gus Lubin | Mar. 2, 2011, 11:52 AM | 17,913 | 75

...

She says a major reason the State Department needs money is because "we are in an information war and we are losing that war."

Clinton said private media is not good enough to handle the job: "Our private media cannot fill that gap. Our private media, particularly cultural programming often works at counter purposes to what we truly are as Americans. I remember having an Afghan general tell me that the only thing he thought about Americans is that all the men wrestled and the women walked around in bikinis because the only TV he ever saw was Baywatch and World Wide Wrestling."

Meanwhile she says Al-Jazeera, CCTV and Russia Today are killing it: "Al Jazeera is winning. The Chinese have opened up a global English language and multi-language television network, the Russians have opened up an English language network. I've seen it in a couple of countries and it's quite instructive."

Clinton says she is leading an effort to spread U.S. propaganda through new media, with twitter feeds in Arabic and Farsi.

...

Hillary, hate 2 break this 2 you but propaganda through twitter feeds in the world and any other tool will never fool anyone until you end the wars. Shameful.

52. Every single day the US media does not tie the wars to our deficits is a crime.
It should be, every single day, "The United States deficit is caused by Afghanistan and Iraq." Every protest should be covered, live, 24/7. The Union Protests, for instance. Charlie Sheen is not important. FOIA requests should be made daily for drone video so the people can see us blowing to bits little kids. The American people would march upon D.C. in such massive numbers that it would blow minds. Right now our minds are being saturated with garbage. I think social media is slowly changing that but it will take at least a generation before it penetrates. It's a shame the media is as useless as it is.

46. Media report Brega "impossible to reach" as AJE reports from...Brega!
Now here's an interesting report, in the Sydney Morning Herald. It contains the line, "Brega itself was impossible to reach on Wednesday." A quick Google news search will reveal that it's a line that has been repeated over and over again. Check for yourself. Our count is nearly 17,000 news articles repeating the line. Obviously we've not checked them all.

But, equally obviously, given our reporting through the day from Brega, and our photos from the town and its hospital, it wasn't exactly "impossible" to get there...

Veteran diplomat Ilan Baruch quits, says he can no longer represent government; Israel's foreign policy is 'wrong,' he says, adds that blaming global anti-occupation views on anti-Semitism is 'simplistic, artificial'

Foreign Ministry earthquake: A veteran diplomat says he has resigned from his post because he had a hard time defending the policies of Israel's current government, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Wednesday.

Ilan Baruch says he quit because "Israel's foreign policy is wrong," pointing to the Palestinian issue.
Should this trend continue, he warned, Israel will turn into a pariah state and face growing de-legitimization.

Baruch told Israel TV Wednesday that Israel's standing was in danger because of its policies, which he said were "difficult to explain."

"I can no longer honestly represent this government," he said earlier. "As (Foreign Minister) Lieberman was elected by a large public in a legitimate manner, I cannot question him – but I don't have to serve him, and therefore I'm quitting.

32. Gaddafi offensive against insurgents failed
An offensive of the Libyan leader Gaddafi against insurgents in the East of the country's Wednesday failed.

Rebels knew an attack on the strategically important oil city Brega. Gaddafi sware unto ' by will fight to the last man and woman '.
According to eyewitnesses, the coastal town of Brega, over 700 kilometers east of the capital Tripoli, todayyou invaded by armed mercenaries in cars. The attackers were supported by artillery and warplanes dropped several bombs. They knew the runway, the port and to occupy oil installations.

Surely six dead
When rebels counterattack stakes, was a battle that lasted all day and definitely six deaths. The rebels got help from supporters from the nearby Ajdabiya. According to eyewitnesses at Brega fell three bombs. Also a barracks in Ajdabiya district was attacked from the air.

After fierce gunfights were about two hundred Warriors of Gaddafi reduced on the grounds of the University in Brega and then chased from the city. At the hospital, where the corpses of six opposition fighters were introduced, gathered angry residents, who called the ' blood of the martyrs is not for nothing tragic '

US Shocked, Outraged by Killing of Pakistani Minister
David Gollust | State Department

The United States is expressing shock and outrage at the Wednesday assassination of Pakistan’s Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian who had sought to amend a law mandating a death penalty for insulting Islam. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the killing, attributed to Taliban militants, is part of an alarming trend of religious intolerance in South Asia and the Middle East.

...

Bhatti, Pakistan’s only Christian cabinet member, became the second senior Pakistani official to be assassinated for opposing the blasphemy law. In January, Punjabi provincial governor Salman Taseer was killed by one of his bodyguards.

...

Appearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the killing was an attack not only on one man but on the values of tolerance and respect for all faiths championed by Pakistan’s founder, Mohammed Ali Jinnah. "I recently had the opportunity to meet with Minister Bhatti. He was a very impressive, courageous man. He was a patriot, he was a man of great conviction, he cared deeply for Pakistan and he had dedicated his life to helping the least among us," she said.

...

She said she was shocked and outraged by his death, which she said was regrettably part of a broader trend of intolerance toward religious minorities. "The attack on Christians in Iraq, the attacks on the Copts in Egypt, the attack on minority Islamic sects in Pakistan and elsewhere is a matter of deep distress to me personally and to our government. It runs against all of our values and we are going to be doing all we can to support the freedom of religion, the freedom of conscience and to work with governments everywhere so that they uphold universal values," she said.

BREAKING: Call of distress from Brega tonight!
Posted on March 3, 2011 by admin

Almanara Media Mail:
O Almanara Media! O free men of Libya! O honourable daughters of Libya! An URGENT URGENT distress call from the city of Brega. In the city of Hrawah which is situated between Raas Lanuf and Sirt, 70 cars full of mercenaries have just arrived to support the battalion which is present there. They plan to attack the city of Brega, occupy it and control its airport. I appeal to God! Please deliver my call of distress! Please! The people of Brega are distressed and the revolutionary youth plan to resist this battalion. By God I fear there may be a massacre tonight, help us help us help us!

The people of Brega

I think there's a lot of food 4 thought here. Even if you disagree, this is clearly, after decades of experience, how the Libyan people see it and that's all that matters.

If you have time, please read the entire article and look at Peace Patriot's posts here and in an LBN thread I didn't comment in so I can't find it now.

We know how terrible our govt has been over the decades to the Arab World, why beat on Hugo Chavez who might be able to really help here? I'm sick of ppl dying and tired of seeing the govt I subsidize pursue a reckless imperial strategy that hurts us and hurts other people- all for the financial profit of very few people (oil companies and the MIC in this case) who own the western govts.

Imperialist hands off Libya!
1 March 2011

...

The pace of the shift in American policy, in particular, is extraordinary. Washington has moved from relative silence on the movement against Gaddafi to leading the charge for outside intervention.

The United States made a major political and financial investment in the cultivation of friendly relations with Gaddafi, regarding his sudden rapprochement with Washington and US foreign policy after 2003 as a major strategic gain. Hillary Clinton recently feted one of Gaddafi’s sons in Washington and appointed the founding chairman of the US-Libya Business Association to be the State Department’s coordinator for international energy affairs.

VIDEO of Hillary and Mutassim Gaddaffi
Gaddafi’s son visited the United States in 2009. Secretary of State Clinton ensured he was made suitably welcome.

...

The momentum toward military intervention is accelerating. The Berlusconi government in Italy—the former colonial power in Libya and the biggest customer for its oil—officially repudiated its non-aggression pact with the Gaddafi regime Sunday. This is the necessary legal preparation both for Italian military action inside Libya and the unleashing of US warplanes at Aviano and other NATO air bases in Italy.

...

In other words, Libya is to be turned into a semi-colony, ruled by the United States and its fellow predators from Western Europe, who will seize control of the oil reserves and transform the country’s territory into a strategic base of operations against the mass uprisings now sweeping the Middle East and North Africa.

That's what Gaddafi said today. :puke:

No credible analysis there at all, sorry. Just know that I believe time for a "peaceful solution" has long, very long since past. And I predict that the National Libyan Council will reject outright any extension of "mediation" whatsoever. I'll avoid further discussion, just know that's my position, and when I am shown to be right I won't rub it in anyones face.

72. Don't see that anyone gives any credence to what Gaddafi is saying --
though most of us well understand that that CIA's prior history is one of covert

action -- but against democratically elected governments -- and liberal governments.

CIA is a right wing/fascist organization -- which over time has taken money not just

from any right wing sources, but also from KKK and Nazis. CIA has worked not only to

keep right wing governments in power all over the world, they've worked to do the same

thing here in America funding the campaigns/careers of right wing politicians --

two I'm aware of were Sen. Strom Thurmond and Rep. Gerald Ford.

Pat Buchanan has also received money from the CIA.

Difficult to fault anyone for thinking the worst about the CIA --

HOWEVER, all over the world as capitalism/corporatists have worked to "harvest slave

labor" over these past decades, we see the same movements by citizens as we've seen in

Egypt and Libya, Yemen, etal -- including Wisconsin.

If America begins to take our own rebellion/revolt more seriously, I've no doubt that

we will hear that it's "red under beds"--!!

edit: fyi Peace Patriot said that before Gaddafi said it, outright. But anyone with a brain could see where it was going as it was exactly the propaganda I told you would be said in LBN during that discussion we had about the CIA. Remember that one?

Just because someone invokes the US's imperialism does not make them magically arbiters of truth, OK? Gaddafi blaming the protests on the US does not make it true, any more than Peace Patriot blaming the protests on the US does.

Al Jazeera English

As fighting in Libya intensifies, attention is now turning to the stockpile of weapons Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, may have built up over four decades of rule. Fears over what Gaddafi could have at his disposal, however, may well not match up with reality, given that the airworthiness of his fighter jets is being questioned, and that years of sanctions and neglect may have rendered much of the army’s equipment useless. Al Jazeera’s Tim Friend reports.
