The weather station at the airport is reading 27 which is weird. Usually they are 5 degrees colder than we are here.

Malaise, Do you know if in 1989 it got really cold in Jamaica? That was the year it got down to 8 degrees F here in Tallahassee. We were downstate and drove back Christmas Day to take care of the farm. The trees south of Perry, Florida were covered in ice. I'd never seen anything like that.

It's gets very cold (by our standards) in parts of the parish of Manchester 40s and 50s. That's the only parish where people have fireplaces. :D

Florida cold fronts normally affect us. On days like today everyone in the Bahamas will wear a winter coat.

And when it got below 60 F we all thought it was freezing and layered on all our clothes. No one but my grandmother owned real winter coats, and she wore the ones she had from her youth in Michigan.

The first year I came up here to Tallahassee, it got down to 18 degrees F. The fountain in front of the university administration building froze solid. I had no clothes appropriate for that kind of weather and was soooooo cold. The good thing was that my dorm room was on the top floor so it was always very warm. The people on the first and second floors complained about no heat.

Here at the farm in Tallahassee we had four inches of ice on the water troughs where we usually have no ice. They had problems with asphalt on the roads just popping up from ice freezing under cracks. It had never happened here before.

The coldest it got here last night on the front porch was about 25. Everybody is cold, but it's manageable.

down here we are in "sub-tropical" zone, and So. Fla, not to mention Jamacia, is "tropical"
so having this kind of cold for 2 years in a row is not what we are used to.

Plus, for folks out west of the Rockies, the humidity EAST of the Mississippi makes cold weather even worse.
I have been much more comfortable in 20 degrees of snowfall in Washington state than in 30 degrees of cold here in Ala.
Any skin that is not covered is going to feel painfully cold, esp. since we seem to get a lovely north wind with the cold temps.
I have discovered that even indoors, socks are my friend.

to my friends further north, I send sympathies, and wonder how you stand it at all.
My friend in Iowa cheerfully emails it is "only" 6 degrees today.
Seems it has be minus degrees before it is "cold" to her.
Just the thought sends me in search of a hot water bottle.

The thing about weather extremes is that if it is really hot out, I simply think, "It's really hot out." And then I might think about going to the pool at the first available opportunity, but that's about it.

But when it's really cold out, I literally have a visceral reaction. Cold stings. It's just painful. I have no desire to want to go out in the cold.
