More disputes, deep divisions, and maybe even attempts at defection at a high level in Gaddafi's regime. #Libya

We know that Sirt now is no longer 100% reliable for #Gaddafi. #Libya

Also that Khamis #Gaddafi no longer is in charge of Tripoli's defense; probably another #Gaddafi is. That suggests in-fighting.

From what I can put together, #Gaddafi and his inner circle are absolutely freaking out. Afraid they'll do something desperate. #Libya

Libya protests: Gaddafi says 'all my people love me'

Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has told the BBC he is loved by all his people and has denied there have been any protests in Tripoli.

Col Gaddafi said that his people would die to protect him.

...

Col Gaddafi said the people who had come on to the streets were under the influence of drugs supplied by al-Qaeda.

He said those people had seized weapons and that his supporters were under orders not to shoot back.

Gadhafi, who has ruled Libya for 42 years, said he felt betrayed by the United States.

"I'm surprised that we have an alliance with the west to fight al Qaeda, and now that we are fighting terrorists they have abandoned us," he said. "Perhaps they want to occupy Libya."

Gadhafi called President Obama a "good man" but said that he might have been given "misinformation."

"The statements I have heard from him must have come from someone else," Gadhafi said. "America is not the international police of the world."

Massive anti-US rally held in Pakistan

PressTV - Mon Feb 28, 2011 6:0PM

Political activists have recently held several anti-US rallies across Pakistan.
More people in Pakistan are joining protests against a CIA contractor charged with the murder of two Pakistanis in the eastern city of Lahore in January

University students, human rights and political activists as well as lawyers have called for punishing Raymond Davis.

...

Washington says Davis has diplomatic immunity and has stepped up pressure on Islamabad to free him.

...

Reports say the CIA is mulling over the targeting of Pakistani diplomats and intelligence agents across the world in an effort to pressure Islamabad to release Davis.

Hundreds of people also staged an anti-American rally outside the US Consulate in Lahore on Sunday. Protesters demanded the capital punishment for Davis.

30. West moves to help Libya uprising, Gadhafi digs in
EXCERPT --

In Washington, Defense Department spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said the naval and air forces were deployed to have flexibility as Pentagon planners worked on contingency plans, but did not elaborate. The U.S. has a regular military presence in the Mediterranean Sea.

The European Union slapped an arms embargo, visa ban and other sanctions on Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime, as British Prime Minister David Cameron told British lawmakers Monday he is working with allies on a plan to establish a military no-fly zone over Libya, since "we do not in any way rule out the use of military assets" to deal with Gadhafi's embattled regime.

In the most direct U.S. demand for Gadhafi to step down, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the Libyan leader must leave power "now, without further violence or delay."

35. U.N. official: Medical situation improving in east of Libya
From Al Jazeera English (AJE) Live Blog - Libya Feb 28:

(All times are local in Libya GMT+2) < (USA EST +7, PST +10) >

8:47pm Valerie Amos, a UN humanitarian affairs official, tells Al Jazeera that while the medical aid situation is beginning to normalise in the east of Libya, the UN's major concern remains the country's west, where aid agencies have so far had limited access.

She said that 100,000 people have so far fled across Libya's land borders with Egypt and Tunisia, and that more people are expected to leave the country in the coming days.

In Benghazi, she said the World Health Organisation, the ICRC and Medicins sans Frontieres aid workers said there was some shortage of medical supplies, but that things were "beginning to return to normal".

She said the UN's major concern was getting humanitarian aid to people in the west.

"We're seeing some horrific pictures of what is happening, and we really want to be able to go in to help people in their time of need."

PJ Crowley, the US state department's spokesman, meanwhile, has confirmed that two USAID humanitarian teams have been deployed to Libya's borders with Tunisia and Egypt. The aid agency has also set aside $10 million to support the Libyan Red Crescent Society and other aid agencies.

43. Peace Institute suspects Gaddafi got arms for crackdown from Belarus
From AJE Live Blog - Libya Feb 28:

(All times are local in Libya GMT+2) < (USA EST +7, PST +10) >

10:51pm The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) says that it suspects that Libya received a shipment of military equipment from Belarus as the government began a violent crackdown on protesters.

SIPRI says an Ilyushin-76 aircraft left a military base near the Belarusian city of Baranovichi and landed at the Libyan airport of Sebha in mid-February.

"The aircraft came from a dedicated military base that only handles stockpiled weaponry and military equipment," Hugh Griffiths, an arms trafficking expert at SIPRI, said.

He added that the Sebha airport where the plane landed was a key military logistics base in Libya's south.

Griffiths said a Libyan government plane has made two trips to Belarus in the past week, although it is unclear who or what cargo was on board.

44. Militia harrassing doctors, taking bodies from Tripoli hospitals
From AJE Live Blog - Libya Feb 28:

(All times are local in Libya GMT+2) < (USA EST +7, PST +10) >

11:12pm According to an eyewitness account from a doctor in Tripoli, pro-Gaddafi militia members are acting as security guards at the capital's hospitals, but, rather than protecting doctors, they are harrassing them, and have been "taking away" the bodies of those killed in violence, while also forbidding doctors from taking pictures of their wounds.

Alia (not her real name), a doctor in the capital, said a patient was brought into her hospital yesterday with a gunshot wound to his chest. He expired after ten minutes, and his body was taken away by armed men wearing the characteristic green armband of pro-Gaddafi supporters.

"When they die, they don't let people come near them, they don't want people taking pictures/videos," Alia said.

The pro-Gaddafi militiamen also "come in with the patient into the resuscitation room, uncomfortable for doctors to work".

They arrest any doctors found trying to take pictures of the dead or wounded, though they do not stop them from treating patients.

Alia also alleged that the militiamen give 500 Libyan dinars to anyone who "snitches" on others, and said she was told on by a nurse recently. This prompted a man with a wearing a "green flag" to come into the room "with a firearm in his hand", wanting to confiscate her and another doctor's phones.

The two were only saved because the administrative staff of the hospital stood by them and insisted that there was nothing on the phones.

Alia also complained about doctors being too afraid to come to work. She mentioned at least four more casualties coming in on the night that the dead patient's body was taken away.

52. If the western powers wants to restore some credibility..
They should start by bombing the airfield at Sahba, which is a rallying point for mercenaries. Just do a surgical strike there, and bomb the guys palace, kill him and step away saying "It's now up to the Libyan people to choose what kind of government they want".

Unfortunately, i seriously doubt that Europe and the US seriously wants free and fair elections, and they don't give a damn about their credibility.

They certainly don't want it in Egypt, which is now clamping down on peoples freedom again. While David Cameron visits the generals, escorted by their entire military-industrial complex for a massive bumlicking session.

It's disgusting.

Approximately 360 million people live in the Arab world, and most of them are supressed and enslaved by corrupt regimes funded by western money, to "ensure stability in the region", which actually means keeping 8 million Israelis "safe" by supporting their slow genocide of the Palestinian people, and robbing the people's oil resources.

I wonder why some historians seem to think that the imperial era is over.

54. I dunno about that, the desert has a lot of landing spots.
You can literally make a landing pad with a bulldozer or hell a truck and a large rake on the back. Theoretically that will only be a temporary setback.

And if the rumors are true that Gaddafi has taken hundreds of students hostage, bombing the palace may be a terrible move, if it kills all of them.

57. Witness: Artillery shelling Misurata NOW..."we are the defending righteous and freedom"
From AJE Live Blog - Libya March 1:

(All times are local in Libya GMT+2) < (USA EST +7, PST +10) >

1:40am Abdullah, a witness speaking to Al Jazeera from Misurata, about 200km east of Tripoli, says:

Theres now artillery shelling on the suburbs of Misurata and on the Air force college, south west of Misurata. There are also helicopters trying to bomb the local broadcast.

They are also using heavy weapons against the protestors
... also last night helicopters dropped leaflets and threats from the regime.

A plane fell in the sea and we arrested five of its crew ... we have weapons trying to use to defend ourselves but it is normal weapons that cannot be compared to the planes or tanks or armored vehicles or the heavy weapons they use to bomb us ... we are the defending righteous and freedom ... we want him to leave.

58. K/R -- They need a "no fly zone" -- Too many martyrs already -- !!
Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 08:18 PM by defendandprotect
There's no way that Gaddafi could continue in power after this --

he's going one way or the other --

Gaddafi is a monster and can still be destructively evil against his own people.

My fantasy would be one of these pilots turning around and bombing him --

60. One can only hope that happens (pilot defection + bombing).
He would be seen as a hero and the dead students would be seen as martyrs.
