French foreign minister quits after miserable term in office
France's Foreign Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie has tendered her resignation in a letter to President Nicolas Sarkozy, following a series of gaffes related to the recent uprising in Tunisia.

AP - The office of France’s foreign minister says she has sent a letter to President Nicolas Sarkozy offering her resignation.

Michele Alliot-Marie has been at the center of a political storm over her December vacation in Tunisia as popular protests there eventually led to the ouster of the former French colony’s longtime strongman.

...

A spokesman for Sarkozy’s office declined immediate comment about whether the president had accepted the resignation.

US neo-cons urge Libya intervention
Signatories to the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) demand "immediate" military action.
Jim Lobe Last Modified: 27 Feb 2011 16:00 GMT

Senator Joseph Lieberman wants the US to arm Libyan rebels

In a distinct echo of the tactics they pursued to encourage US intervention in the Balkans and Iraq, a familiar clutch of neo-conservatives appealed Friday for the United States and NATO to "immediately" prepare military action to help bring down the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and end the violence that is believed to have killed well over a thousand people in the past week.

The appeal, which came in the form of a letter signed by 40 policy analysts, including more than a dozen former senior officials who served under President George W. Bush, was organised and released by the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI), a two-year-old neo-conservative group that is widely seen as the successor to the more-famous – or infamous – Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

...

In particular, it called for Washington to press NATO to "develop operational plans to urgently deploy warplanes to prevent the regime from using fighter jets and helicopter gunships against civilians and carry out other missions as required; (and) move naval assets into Libyan waters" to "aid evacuation efforts and prepare for possible contingencies;" as well as "(e)stablish the capability to disable Libyan naval vessels used to attack civilians."

The usual suspects

Among the letter's signers were former Bush deputy defence secretary Paul Wolfowitz; Bush's top global democracy and Middle East adviser; Elliott Abrams; former Bush speechwriters Marc Thiessen and Peter Wehner; Vice President Dick Cheney's former deputy national security adviser, John Hannah, as well as FPI's four directors: Weekly Standard editor William Kristol; Brookings Institution fellow Robert Kagan; former Iraq Coalition Provisional Authority spokesman Dan Senor; and former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy and Ambassador to Turkey, Eric Edelman.

My Secret Talks With Libya, And Why They Went Nowhere

By Gary Hart
Sunday, January 18, 2004; Page B05
DENVER

In February 1992, five years after I retired from the Senate and entered the world of international law, I was approached at my hotel while on a business trip to Athens by a man identifying himself as a "naval attaché{grv}" from the Libyan Embassy, who was almost certainly with the Libyan intelligence service. This was by no means the first time such a thing had happened to me since leaving the Senate. Nevertheless, there was an air of intrigue about the meeting, and it led to intensive contacts with the Libyan government over the next several weeks.

Although I have never felt the need to discuss these events before, I do so now because they relate to the argument being made by supporters of the current Bush administration that Libya has abandoned weapons of mass destruction as a direct result of the United States's preemptive invasion of Iraq. My experience of 12 years ago suggests a missed opportunity to curb Libya well before Iraq.

As for news that tanks are heading from Sirt to Benghazi, that's just a rumor. Could even be deliberate disinformation. #Libya

I have confirmation that Zlitan has been reoccupied by Gaddafi. It's unclear how many units he has there.

There were attacks on Misurata today, apparently to try to capture it and "show it off" to "touring media"

Today's attacks on Misurata seem to have been targeted at the local radio station from which the rebels have been broadcasting.

BTW, about Benghazi, don't worry about it because stepping there would mean Gaddafi loses his entire army. It's very well defended.

As for Azawiya, there were attacks yesterday, also apparently to capture it and "show it off" to media. Failed, as you now know.

Of course Gaddafi tried to stage "pro" demonstrations to show to the media, but it didn't take.

I'd like you to know that Azawiya, since being liberated, never fell back to Gaddafi really. They were just limited incursions.

Sorman still has Gaddafi units positioned there. Problematic coz they can attack Azawiya or move to block the road to Gharyan.

Gaddafi has a battalion at the town of Al-Mayah (also called Km 27) on the road between Azawiya and Tripoli.

That includes tanks and infantry. He's blocking the way between Azawiya and Tripoli that way.

Moving into Tripoli, the Green Square area is like a camp: tanks, infantry, snipers, mercenaries.

Nasr street, which is between Fashloum and the Green Square, has snipers.

Mitiga airport, rumored to have fallen, is in fact a Gaddafi stronghold. He has infantry and tanks there.

As for Tajoura, popularly it has fallen, but Gaddafi units can still be seen there. They look dispersed and not very organized.

Now to make this easy for you guys to visualize, I'll work on a detailed western #Libya/Tripoli area map so you can place these events.

Still within Tripoli, there have been strange activity at Mitiga airport. Suspect that more mercenaries have just been brought in

Also heard about attempts to fly in "supporters" from Sabha, of course paying them handsomely. Don't know how that went. #Libya

Moving on to the living conditions in Tripoli...

Shops are closed, even the ones that are open have almost no stock left. Still open are mostly pharmacies and food stores. #Libya

Today many people in #Tripoli headed to banks; they insist it's not coz they support the freak, it's coz they're low on food at home.

Rumors that "schools have opened in #Tripoli" are regime propaganda. No one is crazy enough to let his children out. #Libya

My contact says three youths they know were asked at gunpoint to call TV stations and report that "everything is quiet and normal."

After they made the calls, their mobiles were taken away. They were told to stay at home, or will be shot.

They're lucky to be alive. #Libya

I posted yesterday, about the protester killed in Al-Hani district (http://bit.ly/eLsieh); I have more info about the man

He's recently married, his wife is 7-months pregnant with their first child. They live in Tajoura. His funeral was today.

The atmosphere in Tajoura in particular is very very tense. People ready to pounce at any moment. Ripe for revolution.

70. update from iyad_elbaghdadi- Must read, pt 3

People who had previous come to Tripoli (visiting) from nearby towns are now urged not to go back. The road is not safe. #Libya

OK, more about life in #Tripoli right now.

Several sources have provided me with phone numbers, but it's dangerous so I refused to call. I don't want to put them in danger.

People in #Tripoli can call each other, but cannot make outgoing international calls.

And incoming international calls are tracked by the regime. That puts the person being called in danger.

That said, it's probably safe to call people in the east or even in Misurata by phone.

OK so that was my report. There's a lot more going on that I won't say, in order not to compromise people on the ground.

Main effort I'll do now is try to put together a map showing (from multiple sources) where Gaddafi men are.

People in #Tripoli have internet, but only through the regime connections. That means Facebook & Twitter blocked.

Twitter problems now.

However most people in #Libya are used to using proxies and have perfected the art of reaching "blocked" sites.

My contacts for the most part are using satellite internet + proxies + anonymizers.

Ya hear that Lieberman? Good info there 4 ur kill switch

I have exciting news about Ghadamis, it seems that it's finally flying the independence flag!

Waiting for Sabha, that will be a game-changer.

I'm having serious Twitter issues now.

And you're in the UK.

74. A few words on tactics
(a buff sort of thing):

Infiltration can be very useful. And if units can be attacked in unexpected ways (like from the front and rear), this can be very effective.

Also, if you can draw attackers into ambushes (like by faking resistance... although this can be very costly to those doing the faking), and then fall upon them from all sides, depriving them of the ability to maneuver (like in tight, (suddenly) blocked city streets) and of the initiative, this can be very demoralizing. And there's also the trick of allowing an adversary an apparent escape from some (apparent) trap, and then springing the real trap when he tries to use this "escape".

(But if they aren't allowed to surrender, then they might not.)

Try to get into your adversaries' heads, and then take advantage of their thinking (mis-thinking); once they lose confidence -- and begin to truly fear you -- they're in real trouble.

And if overrun, go to ground. Then don't fall for some ploy trying to get you to expose yourselves.

More generally, there seems to a lot of psywar, infowar, propaganda and disinformation going on. And the bandits seem to be trying to draw people out (so they can be slaughtered?) -- and to get the popular forces to make fatal mistakes (like using any aircraft they have too early). Use common sense (if they're using airplanes, these are coming from somewhere), and stay cool, determined.

Rpg's are very portable and a passable substitute for artillery. (Plus, they're "fun".) And simple molotov cocktails (a fragile container with gasoline or the like in it, and with a rag for a "fuse"; but test any weapon before using to make sure it works as envisioned) can be surprisingly effective (like when thrown from rooftops on trapped vehicles). Generally, aim for the vulnerable spots, like the air intakes. Also, I've heard that some soviet made personnel carriers are susceptible to machine-gun (even ak) fire in their wheel wells; try to hit the drivers, gunners and commanders, especially if they stick their heads out.

More generally, field expedient weapons can be very useful. Think about what you have, and how you can use it. Show great cunning and presence of mind; you're obviously a clever and quick-learning lot.

Got any sam's? Pilots fear them. (Always try to use the right weapon (means...) for the job.)

77. Here's also some other really basic stuff
(not to insult anyone's intelligence):

Take positions with good, overlapping (where possible) fields of fire. And if you can fire on enemy approaches from multiple angles, so much the better. (Firing on them from behind tends to diminish their enthusiasm for the attack; however, the stay-behind fighter must be ready to greet death like a bride.) But fire-positions must not be exposed or otherwise overly vulnerable; and obviously you must avoid shooting each other, so consider suchlike things when taking positions and firing. Also, choose the best moments to fire.

And it's generally helpful if you can have staggered and pre-prepared defenses (any cover, as in a hole), with prepared fallback positions already in mind. (Fire, move, fire. Fall back when they are too strong; push forward when they weaken and falter.)

Plus, it's really field-expedient use of (any) weapons, including field-expedient weapons (things that really aren't intended to be used as weapons). For example, some random military ordnance (like that you can't otherwise use) can be very effectively made into an IED.

Also, the tracks on armored vehicles tend to relatively vulnerable, and once immobile, an armored vehicle has lost much of utility... if not its teeth (sneak up and burn them with gas-bombs, if nothing else). But generally it's only a question of time before a disabled armored vehicle is abandoned -- so let them be abandoned. (Just disabling vehicles of any kind can be effective.)

ICRC to dispatch emergency medical assistance to violence-racked Libya

Ahmed Zaki Osman
Sun, 27/02/2011 - 20:31

As the humanitarian situation deteriorates in next-door Libya, a surgical team affiliated with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is expected to enter the troubled North African nation on Monday to help local medical staffs treat the injured, ICRC officials in Cairo told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

“The current situation is getting worse," ICRC Cairo spokesman Mohamed Sultan said. "Hospitals and clinics in cities like Benghazi are struggling to cope with large numbers of wounded.”

The emergency medical team, composed of six surgeons, will provide support for the medical staff of the Libyan Red Crescent, added Sultan.

"We're here to support the Libyan Red Crescent, which has been doing an excellent job over the past week responding to the violence," Simon Brooks, ICRC team leader in Benghazi, said in a press release issued on Sunday.

68. That's a price jump from about $9 per bag to $40
At current exchange rates 1 dinar = about 80 cents U.S.

100 Libyan Dinars = $ 80.53 U.S.

500 Libyan Dinars = $ 402.68 U.S.

http://www.exchange-rates.org/Rate/LYD/USD

Increase of rice and flour from 11 LYD to 50 LYD per bag = increase from $8.86 per bag to $ 40.27

Victims to the Vote

"It has been almost a million months since Iraqis ran to the polls, to fill holes in their souls with bloodstained ballots. Hundreds of candidates dressed up as maggots coloured the liberal lining in occupied skies, and perpetuated the lies that there is democracy. Hypocrisy of the highest order, politicians blaming their failure on porous borders, while blindly following American orders on everything from defence to education. The death of a nation, systematic assassination, and relentless dehumanization of millions of people. The burning of mosques, schools, hospitals and steeples for crumbs of rotten bread. Iraq is dead, shot in the heart and stabbed in the head." ~ Unfinished Letters from Iraq, broken part of a new spoken word piece.

Prior to the vote on March 7th of this year, all the major political factions running in the nationwide elections declared the entire affair to be corrupt and not representative of the people's will. They were preemptively cooking an excuse for any unwanted results that might emerge out of the charade. Independent reports corroborated their suggestions with testimonies of fake registration forms and leaky ballot boxes. However, the elections went through, and the results were applauded by other fake democracies around the world. Since then a constipated coalition building process has left Iraq with no government for more than eight months.

In spite of the satirical sadness of it all, the liberal media, and Iraq's desperate population continue to hold on to the electoral proceedings with religious fervour. From outside Iraq, those who politically organized the occupation see the elections as justification for their complicity in mass murder; while those inside the country try to cope with the immense loss of life by pinning their misguided hopes on the empty promises of one politician or the other.
