I called this Day 10 because the official kick off day was #Feb17 but the kickoff was 2 days early and today is in reality day 12.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Obama, Clinton: Gadhafi should leave Libya 'now'
By David Jackson, USA TODAY

...

The White House readout of the Merkel call:
The President spoke today with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, as he has done with many of his international counterparts this week, to discuss the situation in Libya and coordinate our urgent efforts to respond to developments and ensure appropriate accountability.

The President and the Chancellor shared deep concerns about the Libyan government's continued violation of human rights and brutalization of its people.

The President stated that when a leader's only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now.

The leaders reaffirmed their support for the Libyan people's demand for universal rights and a government that is responsive to their aspirations, and agreed that Gadhafi's government must be held accountable.

They discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to respond. The President welcomed ongoing efforts by our allies and partners, including at the United Nations and by the European Union, to develop and implement strong measures.

The President and the Chancellor also discussed the global economic recovery and the need for effective tools to promote economic stability in the Eurozone.

Here is Clinton's statement:
The United States strongly condemns the ongoing violence and human rights violations committed by the government of Libya against its own people. As President Obama said, these actions violate international norms and every standard of common decency. They must stop.

We are moving quickly on a series of steps to hold the Libyan government accountable for its violation of human rights and to mobilize a strong response from the international community.

Last night the United States took action to limit the ability of senior officials of the Gadhafi regime to travel. As Secretary of State, I signed an order directing the Department to revoke U.S. visas held by these officials, others responsible for human rights violations in Libya, and their immediate family members. As a matter of policy, new visa applications will be denied.

This step followed President Obama's Executive Order freezing assets and imposing financial sanctions on members of the regime responsible for abuses against their own people and the suspension of the very limited defense trade we have had with Libya, including pending sales of spare military parts and other licenses allowing private companies to sell military equipment there.

The United States is also working with our friends and partners to mobilize a strong and unified response from the international community to hold accountable the perpetrators of these unacceptable violations of universal human rights. This afternoon I continued close consultations with our European allies, including EU High Representative Catherine Ashton. Negotiations are underway at the United Nations Security Council on a resolution that would impose new sanctions and restrictions. On Monday, I will meet with a number of counterparts in Geneva and address the UN Human Rights Council, which on Friday recommended suspending Libya's membership. We are also working with partners to determine how to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need. Consistent with the President's guidance, we will continue to look at the full range of options to hold the Libyan government accountable and support the Libyan people.

We have always said that the Qadhafi government's future is a matter for the Libyan people to decide, and they have made themselves clear. When a leader's only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now. Moammar Gadhafi has lost the confidence of his people and he should go without further bloodshed and violence. The Libyan people deserve a government that is responsive to their aspirations and that protects their universally recognized human rights.

U.N. council to vote on Libya but China a wild card

By Louis Charbonneau
UNITED NATIONS | Sat Feb 26, 2011 5:24pm EST

(Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council plans to vote on Saturday on a draft resolution that would slap sanctions on Libya's leaders, but China's delegation was awaiting word from Beijing on its vote, diplomats said.

The draft calls for an immediate referral of Libya's violent crackdown to the International Criminal Court.

...

Several envoys said it was doubtful the Chinese would veto the resolution. They said an abstention or a "yes" vote from China would be the most likely scenario.

...

But council members were divided over whether to immediately refer the issue to the permanent war crimes court. Diplomats said a number of council members, including China, Brazil, India and Portugal, initially had reservations about the ICC language.

UK OT Minister warns Turks and Caicos Islanders to shut up or else…..

....

I read some recent warnings this week by British Foreign Minister Henry Bellingham towards the Turks and Caicos citizens. Upon reading his warnings, I knew I had to answer this directly. We have been waiting in vain for the British to make some gesture to assure us that they are not here to recolonise us or nation build. We are right to question the British interim government on this and demand answers about our futures.

The British tell us that they took over to help us with government corruption. I watched and waited for this corruption to be sorted out. It’s now 2011 and we haven’t seen much of anything in the way of corruption. What we have seen instead is the prosecution team and the British Foreign Commonwealth Office warning us not to get in their way, keeping us at arm’s length while they “reform” land policies, local leadership, civil service downsizing, elections and especially our constitution. These changes are obviously being made to shift power from the Turks and Caicos to the hands of the British. We worry and ask questions every day, yet we remain in the dark. Nobody is watching the British as they raid our cookie jars and now we are warned against questioning matters that have an impact on our lives. Imagine our worry that we have been calling for elections since 2009 but the British hold us off with “we’ll see” and several broken promises that elections are around the corner. We will be waiting and seeing for decades at this rate because the British keep putting endless conditions and milestones on us to keep us from our right to democracy. Of course we are going to ask questions and insist on answers.

This week Mr. Bellingham shook his finger at us and warned us against protesting British direct rule. I am not sure if I should feel worried about more retaliation by the British forces or if I should be relieved with this new warning by Mr. Bellingham. My relief is in the comfort that it may be that the Foreign Commonwealth Office (the office controlling Her Majesty’s colonies) has sat up and taken notice of the brewing unhappiness in the Turks and Caicos. For so long now the British lulled the world into believing that we were happy that they arrived to “rescue us”. The British now betray this lie by admitting that we do not accept or want British rule as shown by our protests.

I have my own message to Mr. Bellingham. We do not need your threats or warnings about protests, Mr. Bellingham. Unlike the protests in the UK, as recently as the student’s vandalism of Prince Charles’ autocar, we have shown composure and respect. You have not shown us respect in return. Last spring when we held the bipartisan “March in March” to protest direct rule, the next day civil servants had their salaries cut by the British. When the local police force in charge of welcoming the Queen, called a “sick out” in protest of direct rule, the officers were investigated and punished. Harsh penal threats by the British were called when some citizens peacefully and symbolically burned your new constitution in the street. You see, we are the ones who are being shown intimidation, you have it backwards.

33. 30,000 militants at $2000 a day plus more than $20,000? Well played, Qaddafi.
So he didn't spend all his oil money on bubblegum and trading cards, that's good for him. Still doesn't change the fact that there are MILLIONS of people against him, the vast majority of his own country, and they've got him surrounded. Plus many foreign banks have frozen money he hid from his country and are sanctioning him. I wonder though if the US played a part in stirring this revolution up.

Yemen: Security Forces, Gangs Attack Reporters
February 26, 2011 - 23:52

(Sanaa) - State security forces have participated in or stood by during brutal attacks on journalists covering the February 2011 demonstrations against Yemens president, Human Rights Watch said today. Security forces or armed supporters of the president have beaten or harassed at least 31 international and Yemeni journalists in an effort to quash reporting on the protests.

Muhi al-Din Jarma, a reporter for London-based Al-Quds and Yemeni newspapers, suffered head injuries and internal bleeding when a group of men attacked him during clashes while a plainclothes policeman stood by.
© 2011 Marwan Al-Ghanadi

"Beating up journalists is a blatant attempt by the authorities to prevent the Yemeni people and the world from witnessing a critical moment in Yemen," said Sarah Leah Whitson, director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch. "Yemeni authorities should halt these attacks and promptly bring assailants, including security officials, to justice."

Human Rights Watch interviewed five journalists who were attacked by security forces or as security officials watched. Human Rights Watch also obtained information on 20 incidents of attacks, detention, or harassment of journalists from the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, and additional cases from the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.

The journalists who were attacked represented media including the Al-Arabiya and Al Jazeera satellite television channels; Al-Quds al-Arabi and the Guardian newspapers; news agencies including the BBC, The Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France-Presse; and news websites including Bern-based Swissinfo and Yemen's Marib Press.

Key tribes abandon Yemen president

by Hammoud Mounassar, Agence France-Presse
Posted at 02/27/2011 2:11 AM | Updated as of 02/27/2011 2:11 AM

SANAA - Pressure on Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign intensified on Saturday when the leaders of two of Yemen's most important tribes abandoned the president and joined the anti-regime movement.

The news came as an official denied reports that police killed four people on Friday in an assault on an anti-government protest in Aden, blaming a southern secessionist group for the attack.

Powerful tribal leaders, including those of the Hashid and Baqil, pledged to join protests against Saleh at a gathering north of the capital, a tribal source said.

...

The Hashids are considered Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation and include nine clans, among them the Sanhan, long a bulwark of Saleh's regime.

Blair, Berlusconi and Sarkozy must be very nervous. Suppose a dethroned and bitter Gaddafi chooses to blab about all their deals?

TUNISIA: Three killed in protests against interim government
February 26, 2011 | 12:51 pm

Protests in Tunisian capital on Saturday left three dead and 12 wounded, as security forces clashed with youth opposing the interim government, Reuters reported.

An interim government has been in power since President Zine el Abidine ben Ali stepped down in January after sustained protests, which later touched off demonstrations throughout the Middle East and North Africa. The government is currently led by Prime Minister Mohamen Ghannouchi -- widely considered an ally of Ben Ali -- and his government has promised that elections will be held by July.

Demonstrations escalated Friday as protesters complained that the interim government was too close to that of the country's deposed leader. There were reports of tear gas and bullets fired in the air in the capital of Tunis on Friday, and violence has spread throughout the country since the uprisings last month.

59. Libya is pathetic.
What did they expect the Gadhafis to do? They told them point blank they would be tried and maybe executed like Saddam was. This "protest movement" is nothing more than a call for revolution. Non-violent resistance strategically used to create disgust once the predictable reaction of the protestors getting slaughtered occurs.

I fully expect Gadhafi to retake West Libya, although I think east Libya will remain free.
