To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama spoke Thursday with the leaders of France, Italy and the United Kingdom on coordinating an international response to the crisis in Libya, the White House said.

In separate phone conversations with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and British Prime Minister David Cameron, Obama "expressed his deep concern with the Libyan government's use of violence which violates international norms and every standard of human decency, and discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to immediately respond," the White House statement said.

While some critics say the Obama administration has been slow to react to the deteriorating situation in Libya, the statement said Thursday's discussions were to "coordinate our urgent efforts to respond to developments and ensure that there is appropriate accountability."

"The leaders discussed the range of options that both the United States and European countries are preparing to hold the Libyan government accountable for its actions, as well as planning for humanitarian assistance," the White House statement said.

First of all today it’s a rainy day here in Tripoli and many people they shy of going out on a rainy day. But I took the car to go to take a look, and I saw that the police stations are really getting occupied but not with the police, it’s either with revolutionary committee members or with public security forces. So these people started really gathering and they started cleaning up the burned stations, so you can see a little bit of movement there.

But there is no presence for the army in jeeps. This I didn’t see, I also asked friends and I know it’s not there anymore. Also, some areas which like I said, where his son or his daughter lives are heavily guarded. Other than that, people are closing the shops, they don’t want to participate, because yesterday he said “”Come back to work and life again,”" but today I saw not even 1% of shops are open.

And when I talk to the people, “”Why are you not opening?”" they said “”We’re not going to open, otherwise he will think that he can order us again, and he can rule us again.”So it’s more like it’s civil disobedience, but not formal. Yeah, that’s what I saw today. Otherwise, the gunshots they’re much less than yesterday and the day before, but you can hear them once in a while.”

In Libya, it's all about the tribes

In Libya, the real power is in its tribal system. For 42 years, the country has had one ruler with Moammar Gadhafi and no political parties. There are about 140 tribes in Libya, but only around 30 have political clout. Libyans don't look to the governement for jobs or to protect their rights and their safety. They look to their tribe.

Traditionally, the tribes raised livestock and guarded the wells for the caravan trade. But when oil was discovered in 1959, the tribes were suddenly rich. While some remained in the desert to continue in the old ways, many migrated north. They moved to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi and Sirte. Sirte is the coastal city where oil flows to the Mediterranean and it is also where Gadhafi's own tribe - called the Gadhafi tribe - is centered. The tribe has been known mainly for grazing goats.

In the west of the country is the Wafalla tribe, the largest tribe with nearly 1 million people. The Wafalla have always looked down on what they consider an inferior tribe with the Gadhafi tribe and resented being ruled by what some of them see as a glorified goat herder. And now the tribe is beginning to turn on the ruler it never liked in the first place.

The tribes in the east of the country, such as the Zuwaya, have felt slighted by Gadhafi's alliance with the western tribes. Now they are striking back as well, threatening to cut off the flow of oil if the violence and repression don't stop.

Yesterday there was a funny show, they brought of course people to bring evidence of that what happened was just some kids playing and some people from Egypt and Tunisia are planning a plot against our government and our people. Then they brought people who were saying yes, ok, one guy who was talking about the casualties and they gave numbers of casualties, but it’s all like amateur work, where you see a lot of contradiction, even in the talk between themselves.

It was really…I hear all the friends who were talking about the talkshow, it’s like a joke. They’re still playing the same songs like they do before. It’s like they never learned the lesson or they’re trying to trick the people to make them think that we’re ok, and there’s nothing happening really, and this is just young kids who try to burn the police stations and police records and to steal from the cars and to horrify the people.

They never talk about that there are people who want their rights or who want to have a democratic government, or they don’t want Gaddafi at all. That’s not an option and that’s not discusable to them. They only talk about how all of this was a plot and Gaddafi is still a good leader…the Leader and everything is fine except when we take care of these kids we will be OK.

9. Libya: Gaddafi's billions to be seized by Britain

The funds are expected to be seized within days. The Treasury is understood to have set up a unit to trace Col Gaddafi's assets in Britain, which are thought to include billions of dollars in bank accounts, commercial property and a £10 million mansion in London.

In total, the Libyan regime is said to have around £20 billion in liquid assets, mostly in London. These are expected to be frozen as part of an international effort to force the dictator from power. A Whitehall source said: "The first priority is to get British nationals out of Libya. But then we are ready to move in on Gaddafi's assets, the work is under way. This is definitely on the radar at the highest levels."

Col Gaddafi was yesterday accused of ordering the deaths of thousands of protesters, but he refused to surrender as Libya descended into civil war.

Meanwhile, the British Government struggled to assert its authority following a chaotic few days.
