Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 8, Part 1
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 09:04 AM by Catherina
Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 8, Part 1

The world’s 100 largest arms dealers, excluding Chinese vendors, sold weapons for $401 billion in 2009, with US vendors remaining in first place

Yesterday's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

Why give aid to middle-income countries?
Most of the world's poor live in middle-income countries, which is why donors should continue to work in places like India and Brazil

Over the past few years a large number of once-poor countries have reached middle-income country (MIC) status, set by the World Bank at $1,000 per person per year. The global poverty problem has changed: most of the world's poor no longer live in poor countries.

In fact there's a new bottom billion – 960 million poor people, or 72% of the world's poor – and they live not in poor countries but in middle-income countries, and most of them in stable states. Only a quarter of the world's poor live in the remaining low-income countries (LICs), which are largely in sub-Saharan Africa. This is a dramatic change from just two decades ago when 93% of poor people lived in low-income countries.

The poor haven't moved, of course. The countries in which many of the world's poor live have got richer, in per capita terms, and have been reclassified. With growth, countries transitioning from low- to middle-income status under World Bank classifications have led to this new bottom billion. China and India together account for about half of the world's poor. However, the story isn't just that India and China have been upgraded to MIC status. If those two countries are removed, the proportion of the world's poor in MICs has still tripled – this is a range of other countries like Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia but also some surprising ones such as Sudan, Angola and Cameroon. There is a now a concentration of the poor – 850 million, or two-thirds of the world's poor – in five populous MIC countries: Pakistan, India, China, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Will this pattern of concentration of the poor in MICs continue? Laurence Chandy and Geoffrey Gertz at the Brookings Institution believe this is the case. Even with conservative assumptions they find that, by 2015, the proportion of the world's poor in MICs will still be 55%. So, it seems that this "new geography of global poverty", with significant numbers of poor people living in middle-income countries, will be with us for a decade or more.

23. Sarin?
Edited on Thu Feb-24-11 08:46 AM by CJvR
That is a nerve agent, if Gaddafi uses that in a city you can expect casualties in the tens of thousand. A simple mask will not protect you, you need a full NBC suit.

WIKI on Sarin:

Effects and treatmentSarin has a high volatility relative to similar nerve agents. Inhalation and absorption through the skin pose a great threat. Even vapor concentrations immediately penetrate the skin. People who absorb a non-lethal dose but do not receive immediate appropriate medical treatment may suffer permanent neurological damage.

Even at very low concentrations, sarin can be fatal. Death may follow in one minute after direct ingestion of a lethal dose if antidotes, typically atropine and pralidoxime, are not quickly administered.<3> Atropine, an antagonist to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, is given to treat the physiological symptoms of poisoning. Since muscular response to acetylcholine is mediated through nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, atropine does not counteract the muscular symptoms. Pralidoxime can regenerate cholinesterases if administered within approximately five hours.

Sarin is estimated to be over 500 times more toxic than cyanide.<11> Treatment measures have been described.<12>

Initial symptoms following exposure to sarin are a runny nose, tightness in the chest and constriction of the pupils. Soon after, the victim has difficulty breathing and experiences nausea and drooling. As the victim continues to lose control of bodily functions, the victim vomits, defecates and urinates. This phase is followed by twitching and jerking. Ultimately, the victim becomes comatose and suffocates in a series of convulsive spasms.

Libya placed billions of dollars at U.S. banks-WikiLeaks
Thu Feb 24, 2011 11:37am GMT Print | Single Page <-> Text <+>
By Natsuko Waki

LONDON Feb 24 (Reuters) - Libya's secretive sovereign wealth fund has $32 billion in cash with several U.S. banks each managing up to $500 million, and it has primary investments in London, a confidential diplomatic cable shows. The cable, obtained by WikiLeaks and revealing the details of a January meeting between the head of the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) and the U.S. ambassador in Tripoli, comes as the United States and European governments explored the possibility of freezing assets belonging to the Libyan government.

LIA, the umbrella body for Libya's sovereign funds managing oil windfall revenues, is estimated to manage assets of around $70 billion with stakes in European bluechips such as Italian bank UniCredit and British publishing group Pearson.

LIA's Mohamed Layas told the U.S. ambassador at a Jan. 20 meeting that the fund operated with high liquidity and was not concerned about the volatility in the oil market.

"We have $32 billion in liquidity, mostly in bank deposits that will give us good long-term returns," the cable quoted Layas as saying at the meeting at LIA's office overlooking the Mediterranean Sea

Qaddafi supporters attack mosque in Zawiya with anti-aircraft missile
Posted on February 24, 2011 by Chronos

Qaddafi forces counter attack on Zawiya

A Libyan army unit loyal to Muammar Gaddafi has blasted a minaret of a mosque with anti-aircraft missiles and automatic weapons injuring scores of anti-government protesters who refused to leave the area, a witness said.

Protesters who had been camped inside and outside the mosque suffered heavy casualties in the attack on Zawiya, 30 miles west of Tripoli, the witness added, though he could not provide an exact toll.

But Col Gaddafi’s son denied the government had launched airstrikes against Libyan cities and claimed reports of the number of protesters killed have been exaggerated.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi told a press conference aired on state TV, that the number killed by police and the army had been limited and “talking about hundreds and thousands (killed) is a joke.”

Press Releases 2011

Notice to the Press
Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
February 24, 2011

In meetings with senior Libyan government officials, U.S. diplomats were told that some members of CNN, BBC Arabic and Al Arabiya would be allowed into the country to report on the current situation. These same senior officials also said that some reporters had entered the country illegally and that the Libyan government now considered these reporters Al Qaida collaborators.

The Libyan government said that it was not responsible for the safety of these journalists, who risked immediate arrest on the full range of possible immigration charges. Foreign journalists already in Libya who are not part of the approved teams were urged to immediately join the approved teams in-country.

Be advised, entering Libya to report on the events unfolding there is additionally hazardous with the government labeling unauthorized media as terrorist collaborators and claiming they will be arrested if caught.

The biggest protest, huge

Libya / Arab world: the Communist Party calls for greater mobilization Saturday, February 26
Wednesday, February 23, 2011 , by Pcf Nanterre

As part of the week anticolonial, CPF calls for greater mobilization Saturday, February 26 at 15h00 Place de la Republique in Paris, in solidarity with the Arab peoples in struggle.

The policy of the French authorities and their supporting dictators have lasted too long.
The CPF supports the Arab peoples who face a brutal, murderous unbearable, especially in Libya. He also protested against the pillage of natural resources, land grabbing, recolonization and economic interference of multinationals in African political life.

CPF condemns with the utmost force repression perpetrated by the criminal regime of Colonel Gaddafi on Libya's population. Far from wanting to ease things, the power of Tripoli fanning tensions. In a television interview, Seif al Islam Kadhafi's son, pretends to agree to reforms while threatening to drag the country into "civil war" with the risk of "rivers of blood". These recent statements are shocking! We urge the French authorities to outspoken and act urgently to stop this massacre and that the Libyan people can express themselves freely.

The PCF will protest on Saturday 26 for a world of solidarity and peace, respect the rights of peoples and individuals and draws all its activists, loving all progressive justice and democracy, to come and express their support for the Arab peoples in struggle

Saturday, February 26 to 15 H, starting Place de la Republique "out of Colonialism"

How Gaddafi became a Western-backed dictator
Posted: February 24, 2011 by peterb1953 in Uncategorized

Italian President Silvio Berlusconi & Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

On February 22, Muammar Gaddafi was boasting on state TV that the Libyan people were with him and that he was the Libyan revolution, even while his dwindling army of special guards and hired mercenaries attempted to drown a popular revolution in blood.

Civilians were strafed and bombed from helicopters and planes. Snipers with high-powered rifles fired into unarmed crowds. Two pilots flew their fighter jets to Malta rather than bomb their own people and another two are reported to have crashed their jets rather than attack civilians. Sections of the armed forces, several diplomats and a couple of ministers abandoned the regime and at the time of the writing the east of Libya was in the hands of popular revolutionary committees.

And as more sections of his armed forces stared to go over to the people, he ordered troops who refused to shoot their own people to be executed.

...

First Gaddafi’s son Saif al Islam (a darling of greedy US and European corporations in recent years) and then Gaddafi himself tried to deny these massacres while simultaneously threatening the Libyan people to carry out ruthless retribution against those who dared to rise up against the regime.

...
