If the MSNBC TeeVee Gurus have any smarts at all, they will re-work Rachel
Maddow's program, and give her a live audience.

Starting with Ed and ending with Lawrence, each program has the same format anchored by very strong personalities. Nothing wrong with that.

However, Rachel with a live audience would break new ground that I think is fertile and ready.

Just thinking out loud this morning.

:hi:

3. Thanks, do 'ya think it's possible that anyone from MSNBC reads DU? More importantly
do you think any of them felt the kinetic energy and electricity between Rachel and the audience?

I doubt it. Too high up in their ivory towers to "get it."

2. Have you seen the movie "Network"?
It was supposed to be satire.

5. The thin line was crossed from satire to real time in color, life. I just don't have
a window to hang out of and scream.....Howard Boyle? Was that the name of the anchor?

8. Do you remember they gave him a show with an audience?
Again, it was satire.

4. I agree, and she also showed how downright funny/ironic she can
be with audience feedback telling the tale. They were amused!

6. The exchange of energy between Rachel and the audience was palatable. This
should be so exciting to the TeeVee execs, that they are running around with their hair on fire this morning because they didn't think of it sooner.

Not.

7. She is also smart and knowledgable
and I think she would do well with Q&A with the audience.

9. While I thought it interesting, I don't care for it to become a regular thing.
she would basically become a copy of the daily show with "serious" overtones.

aka watering down her cred.

I think she does just fine with the format she has.

If she goes the live route, it will become much harder to get serious topical guests.

10. if you are THAT funny
that a live audience gets it, then you've got 'it'...and you really are funny.
does she write all the copy? I know there are other staff, but who does the writing.
It's always very good. But to be informative and clever is hard to do.

I thought it was great.

I know she's not performing per say, but there is an element of entertainment to it...
I liked it that the audience knew when the jokes were...I was laughing at home in the places I normally do. she's funny and smart.

great combo.

11. That would just make it into The Daily Show or Colbert Report.
Which would take away the final vestiges of news, and move it fully into 'infotainment.'

13. At least, every Friday
What a great way to wind up the weeks news. I would guess that would bring out great ratings on Fridays and might lead to all week long.

I really enjoyed last night.

14. At first, I thought Fridays too, but...
...then I realized she might want to get out of town early for the weekend. Does she pretape the Friday shows on occasion? I know they're mostly live, but sometimes taped?

It would also make subs impossible. Chris Hayes is ok, but he can't that with an audience.

17. She could always do the show
in the other town. Most live shows have reruns on those rare days.

19. Some worthy brainstorming going on here, good stuff. I think that Rachel is
capable to handle any format she is given to work in....

I do not see her with an audience akin to the Daily Show, anymore than the Daily Show is akin to Jay Leno.

Re-thinking this after reading comments, I think a regular schedule of live shows some number on a per month basis, be that one or more, is warranted.

Hey MSNBC....go for it!!!

I doubt they will just scrap what they are doing and start over, conservatives/corporatists don't think that way

22. Wouldn't her show become the Daily Show with real news?
I think it would make it LESS of a news show, not more.

24. It's So Strange That...
...you would make this suggestion. I was watching her yesterday and that same thought occurred to me. Without an audience, her humor "appears" to fall flat. However, with an audience, she gets immediate feedback on her little quips. It would also show those tuning in on TV that there are a lot of people that actually agree with her.
