Pathologizing our children

When I was a kid, I did nasty things to my barbie dolls. I turned them into zombies, drawing black around their eyes with magic marker. And my sisters and I would have zombie wars. We did other horrid things to them as well. Thankfully, no one ever dragged us to a psychological examination for those and other antics, that today, I fear, would get a kid labeled.

I believe that children have a certain amount of energy and aggression that is best dealt with by allowing them an active outlet; an expressive outlet. That's my main problem with video games and tv watching- they've supplanted those outlets. And adults have enabled that.

I took the heads off of all of my sister's dolls too. I hadn't thought about it, but yeah, today, I'd have probably been sent to a psychologist for being crazy. My barbie dolls were essentially action figures.

or gave them Mohawk haircuts. THEN she beheaded them.

4. 40 years ago, my G.I. Joe...

...had sex in Barbie's dream house, with the little-girl-next-door's Barbie doll.
Now that little girl and I are friends on Facebook, and we a big laugh about that.
No, neither one of us grew up to be sex offenders...

5. And then a few years later...

...in a different house with a different little-girl-next-door, we used to play "Symbionese Liberation Army."
She would be Patty Hearst, and I would be Donald DeFreeze.
We would rob the bank in her garage, and her brother and friends would shoot us with cap guns.

None of us grew up to be bank robbers, or radical left-wing militants.
I should look up that little girl on Facebook, just to make sure...
