Steve Landesberg, of Barney miller fame, has died :(
Steve Landesberg -- famous for his roles on "Barney Miller" and more recently "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" -- has died ... this according to the actor's agent who spoke with TMZ.

We're told Landesberg died of cancer early this morning. He had been battling the disease for a while.

Landesberg played Dr. Rosenbaum -- the pediatrician -- in "Sarah Marshall." But he was more famous for his role as Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the TV show "Barney Miller," which ran from 1975 - 82.

Story developing ...

1. One of the funniest guys who ever walked the planet
His deadpan delivery of truly hilarious lines was legendary. One Barney Miller episode, he brought in a perp on the day the statute of limitations was due to expire on the guy's crime. The guy was livid, because he thought he'd gotten away with it, and ranted that some detective must have worked for years to piece together all the evidence that finally brought him to justice. Landesberg blithely and without a trace of gloat said, "I started working on it at 10 this morning," which spun the guy into a whole new realm of pissed off.

2. Barney Miller was one of my favorite shows
Wish they would dump the ridiculous 'reality' shows and bring back more like it.

25. Reminds me of something funny from when I was a young teen
I was on the bus to the chess club downtown and I rewrote the song 'Saturday night fever' and replaced "you can tell by the way I use my walk" with "Wok" - won't say much more than that :)

31. Farewell Steve!
He'll join Jack Soo in that TV show in the sky.

"Barney Miller" got its start when I was pretty young and I didn't get the humor. When I was teenager, I saw the show in reruns and was able to appreciate it a great deal more. One of Det. Dietrich's most famous lines "What the hell is that?"

I was a HUGE fan of Barney Miller. Such a comedy with genuine characters.

My wife and I have been watching old clips of him, especially his Gregory Peck impersonation.

RIP, Steve. And you too, Jack Soo.

You'd see the guy walk over to the bench, take off his helmet, and say, "Oy vey what a hit!!""

I hope I did that joke justice.

Funny funny guy.
