Teenagers humiliating America's homeless
http://www.irishcentral.com/story/ent/manhattan_diary/teenagers-humiliating-americas-homeless-116559383.html

The subway train pulls into Times Square and it stalls there. It's not unusual: crime, crumbling infrastructure or the mentally ill stop the MTA in its tracks in New York City much more often these days.

Usually you just shrug and you wait. But yesterday was a little different. As we stood in the crowded train I noticed a group of teenagers pointing eagerly at someone on the platform. They couldn't contain their amusement so I looked out to see what was going on.

I saw a mentally ill African American man, about 60, in a cheap blue track suit, who was clearly in distress. He was homeless and although was standing in one place his entire body was convulsing, his arms flailing wildly, as though something was on him that he couldn't throw off.

It was pathetic and frightening. It never occurred to me that it could also be entertainment.

1. Homeless
It can happen to any of us, young and old. Maybe this is something that needs to be realized.

30. Agreed. I've never liked teenagers...not even when I was a teenager myself!

4. It's the culture
not necessarily the teenagers themselves. If they're raised to look down on homeless people, that they're just lazy bums who won't work for a living, of course they're going to have contempt and disdain for them.

9. God, that's disgusting! I'm glad he called them on it. Society is sorely lacking in
empathy and compassion these days, and the RW blowhards in this country are leading the way.

15. That's certainly a comfort to know, and I'm sure that news greatly cheers homeless people
who are beaten and killed by these thugs.

19. The tragedy here is that there are two labels used to distance us from the horror...
"Teenagers." Who are "teenagers?" They are OUR CHILDREN.
"Homeless." Who are the "Homeless?" They are, but for the grace of god and a little luck US. ALL of US.

So here we have the story: OUR CHILDREN are humiliating US.

Why can't our society realize and accept its responsibilities to educate and/or care for everyone in it?
Why does this country have "homeless" people in it at all? Why do any of our children find anything like this remotely amusing?

Why do I have to daydream about winning a really really big lottery to do something about helping the homeless? (I know, every little bit helps...but where do I even begin to help?)
Sorry. I know, I'm ranting.

21. going through my things to decide what I can carry with me after my eviction
I don't have a car so I have to carry what I can therefore my choices are limited. It appears I will have to take a weapon with me as well to protect me from young affluent thugs.
My health sucks, but I was well trained in my youth, perhaps I can take a few with me so others will not have to face them.

This is no longer the country I grew up in, It is a cruel country full of heartless and cruel people.

22. How utterly disheartening.
The fact that anyone could see such a thing and not try to help the guy, let alone laugh at him, speaks volumes about who we have become as a people.

Maybe I should take heart in the fact that someone found this event sufficiently egregious to write about it. If we get to the point where we take the behavior of those budding psychopaths as normal, then all is lost.

23. It's not just teens, unfortunately
When I was homeless (as a white, female, blond teen, no less!) I suffered massive heat stroke. I collapsed in the park I was in and when I woke up I was surrounded by three older men of the deer hunting sport shirt variety. Apparently they had dumped a beer on me to wake me up and thought it was pretty funny that I had no idea what was going on.

I lost a lot of faith in humanity that day.
