Dear Friend Who I've Known For 20 Years: I'm so happy for you. It sounds like retirement is going well. That union pension is enough to cover your mortgage on the little house on the lake, isn't it? Oh, and you get Social Security too? Wow, good for you. I know you complained about the union constantly while you were working, so I suppose that somehow cosmically cancels out the hypocrisy of happily cashing those pension checks. Way to go, buddy.
Thanks for your recent email. It's kind of funny that you mentioned Medicare. I nearly forgot that you're 65 now. You're getting checkups and seeing all kinds of doctors, eh? It's even better than your union-supported health benefits? That is truly impressive. I'm not sure why you told ME all that, considering the arguments we've had about "Obamacare." But gee, go see those doctors. Might as well take advantage of the benefits you worked so hard for all those years.
Me, I'm still slaving away at my new job. You know, the one I took so I could get some health insurance, which surprise surprise comes with a whopping $6,000 deductible. I work 50 to 60 hours a week. No overtime. No paid layoffs. No union arguing for better benefits. Eight years to go before Medicare kicks in. Guess I'm just a schmuck.
Tell me more about this idyllic life of yours. It helps me dream.
Love ya.
