I just saw the BEST sign ever!
I'm watching the Ed Show tonight, where Ed is hosting from Wisconsin among the protesters. Caught on camera was a protester bearing this sign:

"No Longer a Republican"

Wow. I think this is the first time I've had REAL hope in a long time!

2. Can you make that image bigger?
The sign is hard to see with these old eyes.

4. I can try..
I just clipped from the video. I'm not the best photo editor, but I'll see what I can do to find a better image. If anyone here is good with this kind of stuff, have at it!

5. How weird
I was just watching the show and just saw that and thought, what a great sign! I wonder if anyone on DU has seen it. I turned to DU and clicked refresh and this thread was on the top, LOL!
I hope this is an awakening for many who, because of propaganda, voted against their best interests in the last election.

8. Allow me to be candid...
Edited on Fri Feb-18-11 02:00 AM by Modern_Matthew
I was a libertarian up until about 2 to 3 weeks ago.

What opened my eyes was getting hired for a retail position in October, being told it was going to be a regular position, and getting laid off after Christmas. My final scheduled day of work was actually December 25. I was told when they hired me that I'd still get about 25 hours a week after the holidays. Ugh!

I found out by checking the schedule and seeing that nothing was listed next to my name. Then, we were informed by a note (passed down from the store manager to an assistant and finally pawned off on our part-time team leader) that he'd like to thank us for our hard work and we might get called back in the Spring. x(

9. I'll be candid as well...
@Modern_Matthew: I used to be a Libertarian too. Oh, and before that, I used to be a Republican (a ditto-head, no less)!! I, too, woke up as a result of corporate b.s. Kind of funny in fact, I went:

From Republican... to Libertarian... to employment as a union organizer!

Sorry to hear about your job :(

13. I'm glad you woke up! Aren't you much happier now? I'd think being a ditto-head
would be stifling -- all that hatred! This from my perspective, of course.

We need you on the side of the people! :pals:

Thanks for what you do!

19. I guess you could be a Republican Union Organizer?
I'm not sure, but aren't some people voting GOP because they oppose free choice regarding abortion, and also want us to have a "Christian government", plus some of them are a little bit racist? People like this COULD be voting republican and also be pro-union. They would prefer their union members to be god fearin' white folk who picket abortion clinics in their spare time.

11. I think libertarians and progressives share some ideals, like live and let live,
but maybe for different reasons?

I'm glad you found your way to DU -- you'll see we're not the government-can-do-no-wrong-zombies that we're accused of being -- far from it!

So sorry about your job.

12. Hugs
and welcome to our little bantering place.

I know I have in the past.

I suspect this is happening to more than just you... historically it happens every so often, like every two generations or so.

15. In my case, it was just ignorance
Due to dinner every week with my very Republican in-laws (I was Republican in my 20s). I hadn't had enough time at that point to experience reality. My attitude was, "Hey, I work hard, why should my hard-earned money go to welfare slackers?". Ugh. Makes me shudder with shame now. My saving grace was that 1) I'm open minded, 2) and that I came upon tough luck and hard times and was faced with a broken social system. It didn't MATTER that I worked hard, harder than anyone else on the job, that I had a great work ethic. Ah, but this is a whole other topic.

18. I think most closed-minded opinions are a result of ignorance. You were open
enough to pay attention and listen. You've more than redeemed yourself! Go in peace and sin no more. :7 :hi:

20. No need to worry
@Gately: I've been a Democrat for years now, actually. Years ago, I was a lukewarm Republican. Unfortunately for them, I really enjoy reading. The more I read, the more I grew as a person, the more I found that my developing values and insights were liberal. And the more liberal I became, the more shocked, outraged, and activist I became.

I still have dinner every Sunday with my O'Reilly and Beck watching in-laws. I've learned to keep my mouth shut after too many heated arguments, figuring, "well, they are the way they are, they'll never change, no matter what I say." The most outspokenly conservative of the family is my sister-in-law. A ray of hope... last week, I overheard her tell her parents that she's been watching Obama's speeches, saw Obama on O'Reilly, and said "You know, I actually enjoy listening to him. I think he's honest; he really does believe in what he says."

You could have heard a pin drop!

23. My dad is no longer a Republican...
He voted for Bush twice... but has repented his sins and is a registered and voting Democrat after a full life as a staunch Pubbie. The light is a wonderful thing.
