NYU fellow calls Lara Logan a war monger, is forced to resign
http://www.bostonherald.com/jobfind/news/media/view.bg?articleid=1317263

A journalist resigned from his New York University fellowship today, one day after he posted derogatory comments on Twitter about CBS reporter Lara Logan as the news of her assault in Egypt was breaking.

"Jesus Christ, at a moment when she is going to become a martyr and glorified we should at least remember her role as a major war monger," Nir Rosen wrote on Twitter. He later added, "Look, she was probably groped like thousands of other women."

Rosen resigned from NYU’s Center on Law and Security. He also took to Twitter to apologize.

"As someone who’s devoted his career to defending victims and supporting justice, I’m very ashamed for my insensitive and offensive comments," he wrote.

Reached by e-mail on Wednesday, Rosen did not immediately respond to questions about his Twitter posts.

3. He posted worse than that
At least the Herald showed the wisdom not to publish those comments. There are legitimate criticisms of Logan to be made, but this is not really the time for them.

sexually assaulted when he wrote those things. It's obvious to me that he hates women.

12. Nir Rosen is hardly just some NYU fellow
He regularly contributes to leading periodicals, such as Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, the New York Times Magazine, the Boston Review, and Harper's. He contributed to the footage of Iraq in Charles Ferguson's documentary No End In Sight and was also interviewed for the film.

That said, what about Debbie Schlussel?

13. as a society, I fear that we're going way too far with "gotcha" politics....
Edited on Wed Feb-16-11 07:55 PM by mike_c
People need to understand that not all personal opinions are shared and generally approved, and that even when they are, not all opinions are always articulately and sensitively expressed. We've all had the experience of reacting to something we hear, and then wishing we had phrased our reactions differently. In today's media and political climate however, such remarks are seized upon and waved around, often later and utterly out of context, as a means of "proving" that the speaker is actually a rotten rat bastard POS whose opinion insults the sensitivities of all good people. In other words, "Gotcha!"

This is unfortunate. It is a good way to filter out the actual rat bastard POS's, of course, but it also eliminates many thoughtful and articulate persons from public discourse whose opinions might otherwise be broadly useful and informative. Unfortunately, we all practice "gotcha!" dialog occasionally. Now it's becoming the rule in public discourse, unfortunately. I think it does not serve anyone well to remove smart, articulate, and passionate people from public debate.

The person who made that statement is the one be excoriated throughout this thread. I think that illustrates my point quite well. We don't always agree with one another, and we don't always rise to our own individual standards of discourse. That is just human nature. In today's climate, that too often leads to moments like this one, when an important voice is effectively eliminated while others, often with little skin in the game themselves, crow "Gotcha!"

14. THe title of this post is bullshit. He resigned because of disgusting comments he made about her
rape, not because he called her a warmonger. This is a disgusting post. He did this to himself and has no one to blame but himself for the degrading comments.

learning about what rape is. And isn't.

15. Apologies From Dubai. Nir Rosen: ‘I Feel Like Shrinking Now’
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowldc/apologies-from-dubai-nir-rosen-i-feel-like-shrinking-now_b31302

4. Are you genuinely sorry for what you wrote about Logan and how are readers supposed to believe that?
I feel like when you have done something so offensive and stupid, even trying to explain it seems like you are justifying it and what you say will be taken out of context. So I need to state that my views on women’s rights have always been quite radical (in defense of women). Moreover the last eight years of working in the Middle East, parts of Africa and Asia (like Afghanistan) and in Mexico only further outraged me, because I have seen first hand how brutally women are treated there. And we are only a little bit better in the West. The status of women in the United States is also deplorable. I have spent eight years risking my life as a journalist and also as a consultant to several NGOs and humanitarian organizations to bring attention to victims of injustice and to give voice and empowerment to the weak. By joking around with some friends I betrayed all that and betrayed my family, friends and supports, and I brought shame upon myself and them.

remarks by saying he was "joking" with friends. there is NOTHING to joke about in a rape situation, rosen, and, if you have truly worked as you say, then you should KNOW this.

I wonder if we are going to see him anymore on DN or TRMS
