I despair of being able to prevent Social Security cuts
I mean, when even pretty reliably liberal political cartoonists fall for the lie that SS is a budget problem, I just don't see how the average American is going to be able to cut through the sea of crap and fight for what they are owed. The disinformation is constant and comes from all directions.

examples

I have yet to see one, ONE, toon laying out the facts about Social Security- that it is funded completely through 2037, that we already pay into it and had that amount increased in the 80's to "stabilize" it, and that only small changes in projections would mean that it could be solvent for much longer.

And yes, I write letters, but still the media foghorn blares on...

5. Yep. And tax cuts
We are locked into a death spiral- cut taxes when times are good, then cut government spending (except for military) during bad times. Now we even cut taxes on the rich when times are bad, to make the situation worse.

7. Give em a break -
just how would you draw 'raise the cap by 20% and make SS solvent for as far as the eye can see'?

9. How about this
Draw a person between 3 machines. One, SS, is healthy, and has a steady stream of contributions going in and checks coming out. The others, Medicate/aid and Military, have obvious imbalances. Once could also show a military machine crapping out bombs in exchange for money. Caption- This one here (SS) is doing just fine but these others are gonna bankrupt you soon....)

8. because to explain it, you need more than a slogan or a 1-frame picture
It's like publishing your autobiography in a Twitter format.

10. Don't despair, despite the lies, Americans overwhelmingly reject SS cuts
more than 70%. We need to mail these polls to our reps every day so they know they will lose their jobs if they vote for this shit show.

19. Unfortunately, 70% of Americans also wanted some form of public option
in the HCR bill - you saw how that worked out.

The wishes of the majority no longer tip the scales against the powers that be.

22. since when is a minimal public option 'some ideal scenario'?
Single-payer, and reduction of private health insurance to supplemental plans only - THAT is ideal. A public option is far from ideal.

And it still begs the question - why was the desired choice of 70% of the American public cavalierly disregarded?

And how that that bode for 70% of Americans opposing cuts to SS?

20. The reason is that Americans know SS and they know by looking at their pay stub
each pay period. They know they and everybody else is contributing. So in their minds, they don't regard it as an "entitlement" in the sense that the RW means it. Americans feel they are "owed" it. Plus, they've seen it work throughout generations in their families.

13. It's really insane how the falsehood has spread. Infuriating.
The politico salivation over the huge pile of money in the SS Trust Fund must be overwhelming, something I feared when it was first devised in the Reagan/Bush era.

16. Wall Street Journal ran a long campaign -- 10 years or more -- re SS being
a "Ponzi Scheme" -- with VERY LITTLE REPLY, IF ANY, FROM THE

DEMOCRATIC PARTY --

Actually, while the right wing propaganda is hurtful and damaging -- imo,

it's the lack of reply from the Democratic Party which helps it along!!

No stopping this, the entire political establishment is on board, all we can do is retaliate, in the streets.

...you know we are being prepared to be brutally fucked.
