Inspired by stories of successful volunteer events elsewhere, dentists and staff from across the county volunteered a full day to see Knox County Dental Program patients. Held in honor of Valentine's Day, the Feb. 11 event was called Dentists with a Heart.
In that one day, 17 dentists, eight hygienists, 20 assistants and seven receptionists volunteered and saw 85 patients for restorative care and extractions and 30 patients for cleanings.
The Knox County Dental Program serves patients in a space in Rockport that was donated by Dr. Jonathan Goss, holding office hours on Monday and Tuesday, and offering x-rays and cleaning.
Volunteer Kathy Beck works at the clinic and was acting as receptionist at Maine Coast Family Dentistry in Thomaston for the Feb. 11 event. Beck is retired and learned about the Knox County Dental Program through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
"I have time to offer," she said.
