Received a vague response when asked whether Senator Durbin supported slashing LIHEAP funding.
I swear, he's so far up this administration's butt, he's near blind. There are so many seniors that this will affect. Some seniors and poor who live in rural areas also receive weatherization assistance through sister programs.
We can bail out the banks, we can give the already wealthy additional tax cuts, but we can't help the poorest among us keep warm during a particularly harsh winter season.
UGH.

in which you could trust them to do the right thing, because there would be no judgment calls as to how to deliver the care, like there would be with things like not-for-profit longterm-care-homes or other services for those who are at risk. With heat, it's either on or off. Not like the questions/judgment-calls that surround dementia care for the financially disadvantaged.

noblese oblige I'd faaaaaaar rather have them just PAYING to keep people appropriately warm or cool, instead of having them build some very expensive byzantine bullshit charitable bureaucracy with lots of extraneous jobs that decides if/when/how the poor receive medical care.
BTW, if we did the right kind of search on the DU, you might just find I was either the first, or a very early adopter, to use the terms ChurchCo & SaintCo.

"A person familiar with President Barack Obama's budget proposal says he wants to cut $2.5 billion from a program that provides home heating assistance to the poor, which would reduce it by half."
That sounds to me like a mind reader with at least two degrees of separation from Obama.
I'm saving my anger for things that Obama actually does, or doesn't do.
That said, I send email to my local representatives all the time. I'll send one with two points. One being there ought to be a law that prohibits reporting as actual news ridiculousness such as two-generation mind reading information; two being I flat don't want ANY services cut for the poorest of us all.
|
|
It's not just those against the poor, it's the ones who say they're for them but aren't there when it counts. I've watched this happen for 20+ years now (I know of those who have faced it longer). Juniper is a good person, and I don't want to disparage her at all, yet the poor still face this massive uphill climb because many of those on our side are busy defending the roadblocks, or trying to reframe the issue into a more palatable pill.
|
|
outrage ,even though it might turn out to be false,is that so many people sense there is no real passion in Obama for the poor.Based on his previous behavior people feel this could be true.Obama is not black, culturally, emotionally or life experience wise.
|
|
I try not to say bad things about people, since that depends on believing the reporting being accurate. I support concepts and if they apply then support the person.
And I think President Obama has a good heart. I think either the reporting is wrong, or he is running the other direction, or someone else is running things.
Just to show I can say something bad about him, I thought his speech to the grade schoolers a year or two ago was a bit condescending, and I also did not like his instinctual bow to the Saudis.
However, I think he has a good heart, and is being limited by someone, or the news stories are not accurate. He has said many good things, and some bad, who hasn't.
I think he should press harder on the banks, and the Clinton group does not serve the country very good as advisers. To many bankers and financiers, they need to clean out that nest.
But mostly I think most of the posts here about what is going on as relayed by the news are not accurate.
I support concepts of less consolidations, and representative governance. Pretty simple from there.
I think he is a mostly good person and like him though, if he does opposite things, I disagree with him on those things.

But the disappointment at some times, and the attempts and sincere energy seems it is more about being in a tough situation. Here is the problem, and one of the reasons I don't fight people. It is possible he is a way lefty and is doing way left political stuff and we are not hearing about it. It is possible he wants to do more lefty, but is trapped by various problems in the system and the fact that not everyone is on the same page. It is possible he wants to do more lefty but is being maneuvered. It is possible he is more lefty and is being pushed or threatened by the same made up news stuff seen in many places. If a Glenn Beck CGI can be hocking watches on a shopping network, what else could be happening. He could be way right. He could be trying to make the best out of a situation. Here is the problem with fighting, you would have to blame someone without knowing the exact situation they are in, and without knowing the exact information of what is happening. So I play music, and support basic concepts, if it applies, it applies. If it doesn't, or if they are in some situation tougher then the one you are in, don't worry about it, because they can only do what they are able to do. So Clinton, Obama, Bush, I disagree with many things 'reported' that they support, and agree with many, and think some things really should occur, but also know the difficulties in many of those situations. So people can only do what they can do. Although whats up with the lack of correction on beer and travel money? that shows there are filters to blame somewhere, and filters are not the people on the news. Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg8cDmi7-U8 Although I still support people in the bars more then most people you see on TV, but know there are many mostly good people on tv also. Here is the thing, there are very few people in the bars that would not correct the beer and travel money issue, but it seems that same correction is tougher for people that are in some of those traps. Or it is a filter problem. I figure either they are not in control at all, or they are being phony.
|
|
blaming the wrong person for eight years of mismanagement. People expect President Obama to make changes in two years, that is not going to happen, 8 years of fuckery takes twice that long to correct the situation. Just my 2 cents but due to inflation, that is a dollar US!
We can crow until the cows come home, we have to accept that politicians are there for their own aggrandisement, once we vote them in, we are fucked. I really wish there were honest people who run for office, but that is wishful thinking!
|
|
He is the president of the USA, and the system that was in place at the time of the election.
I am outside of that system until proper correction occurs.
I am due beer and travel money, and many experiences.
He is his own person, as all people should be.
|
|
I supported the many of the concepts he spoke about, some of the concepts of some in congress.
And I am not cheer leading, I am stating what should be. And explaining my view on that.
Posting here is basically only to remove a final avenue of options. You may not understand that if what should happen does not occur, then society does not exist anyways.
Proving that is as pivotal as anything else.
|
|
But hey, the ones making less than $20K a year can help pay for their heat out of their larger paychecks this year due to the payroll tax holiday...
Oh wait, their paychecks will be smaller.
Oh, and since the cuts to LIHEAP aren't really cuts but just an end to funding we can tell them they're just imagining that they're cold! Or that they should remember how much warmer they were back in 2009.
|
|
All the money we raised for him should have gone to the poor to begin with, now that we know our donations to politicians end in the same policies that starve the poor, we are a little wiser and should know what to do next time.
Sadly, I no longer have money and will be homeless myself in may. Next winter I expect to be my worst since I was homeless at 16.
To think what I wasted on a man who hates me and all other poor and working class folks. I could have saved that money to have a place a couple more months now, or I could have given it to the poor then, perhaps less would have starved to death.
what a waste what a waste..
|
|
It's a systemic problem, not a problem with just one elected official - or even 535 officials. We need to address three critical issues if we want our government back: 1) campaign finance reform, 2) electronic voting, 3) the media. Considering the number of non-voters, I don't think the political will is there. We are fucked. BTW, welcome to DU.

Obama wants to cut for the poor. He also wants to cut Community Service Block Grants by 50%. The amount of his proposed cuts to programs that serve the poor are a small fraction of the revenue that was lost because he pushed the tax cuts for the wealthy under the guise of saving the cuts for the average citizen. How can a tax cut for everyone make up for pulling the only safety nets remaining out from under our weakest citizens? What worries me is what do I do in 2012? I cannot vote for a Republican, that is just plain stupid. But I cannot, with a clear conscience vote for Obama after this insanity. Then there is the fact that no vote is a Republican vote. I am so confused and hurt about Obamas' lack of humanity. I think Obama is a plant, e.g., someone put in a position by pretending to be someone else or a toxic weed. Neither one are good. I supported this man from day one and gave lots of money that I did not have to spare to support his campaign. I feel cheated and I have buyers remorse. I want Ms. Clinton, at least she is not mean spirited.
|
|

-- truly heart-breaking stuff. Your government utterly destroyed an ancient and beautiful country. Madeline Albright actually said that the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children was "worth it" for America's aims. That is just plain EVIL.
I can't begin to list all the horrific war crimes of the American government. Surely you have read Howard Zinn and John Perkins and Noam Chomsky. Who in their right mind would NOT wish the American Empire to go down? What do you need an Empire for? You can't afford your wars.
Economically, if your dollar collapses it will hurt us all. It is already hurting us all. The world wide hunger is a direct result of American economic policies.
Canada? Our history is slightly less unseemly than yours. We weren't as terrible to the Indians. I am ashamed of the present predicament of our First Nations People and there are too many poor. But we sheltered slaves that fled across the border to Canada and even chased slave owners right back over the border if they tried to recapture them. Our history is slightly less violent.
We refused to go into Iraq but alas we are in Afghanistan I think NATO is wrong.
What evil to bail out those bankers and cut off subsidies for the poor! I can tell you that an act like that would be out-and-out political suicide for our PM. He would do something like that if he could get away with it but believe me he could not. It would be front page news in every Canadian newspaper and he would be dead meat!
As far as being mean-spirited don't take it personally. There are lots of Americans who want the Empire to crash and burn. Symbolically. Lucky for you it won't be physical shock and awe or collateral death by drones seeking "terrorists". But I stick to my belief that the worst terrorists on this planet are the American government.

since that isn't happening, the hyperbole qualifies as ugly. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today the release of $200 million in emergency contingency funding to help eligible low-income homeowners and renters meet home energy costs. These Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) contingency funds will provide states, territories, tribes and the District of Columbia with additional assistance to pay heating and other home energy costs. “During the cold winter months, heating your home becomes more than a matter of comfort,” said Sebelius. “The release of these emergency funds will help low-income families and individuals afford the high energy costs rather than force them to make cutbacks on other essentials.” LIHEAP helps eligible families pay for home heating, cooling and other energy costs, as well as helping to weatherize eligible families’ homes. The $200 million in emergency contingency funds released today are in addition to the basic LIHEAP funding made available to states under the continuing resolutions since October 1 totaling $3.9 billion for Fiscal Year 2011. “Low-income individuals and families are hit hard by energy costs,” said David A. Hansell, HHS acting assistant secretary for children and families. “We are releasing these emergency funds to states to help meet the critical needs of vulnerable children, seniors and families.” For a complete listing of state allocations of funds released today go to: http://www.acf.hhs.gov/news/press/2011/fy11_liheap_fund... .

and reported by multiple news sources. He is requesting a slash not only in heating assistance, but in block grants for impoverished communities.
We can only hope that enough OUTRAGE is generated by the news of this plan to stop it from appearing in the final budget. That he would request this in the first place is despicable.
Except you could be right, and they are making it all up!

since the budget isn't out yet. It's one thing to be outraged by the report, but another thing entirely to claim that the proposal is a set in stone. Claiming that the President wants to make "poor people suffer and likely die" is hyperbole.
As for this: "If he felt that, he'd propose cuts that don't inordinately burden the most disadvantaged. He has NOT."
And you know this based on a couple of reports? The budget is a huge document filled with a lot of proposals, and if it's anything like his last budget proposals, it will be well-thought out.
The budget is due out Monday, and even then there will be months of debate. Everyone will weigh in, including Republicans.

It comes from the dead and dying in the "Gaslands" of much of the USA. People who took up the regional energy companies call to action, and signed some papers and then found derricks for natural gas on their property, along with at least 580 chemicals that are toxic, carcinogenic or neurological disturbing agents.
Our energy comes from the coal companies, that had their representatives go off to swindle the Appalachian land owners. The Appalachian families signed off on selling their mineral rights, way back in the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds. For less than a keg of moon shine, Kentucky and Tennessee families gave up their rights in perpetuity in order to have a few dollars more. So now people who have watched the big mining firms blast a gazillion bucks of coal from their property - they can't drink the water and the crops they grow are tainted. The coal in those hills made everyone but those who actually should be the owners of the land rich.
This is a crying shame. One thinks of Jefferson, and his decree that:
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them (around the banks), will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."
And the Clinton/Bush/Obama Administrations have really bent over backwards to see to it that the corporations are allowed to fulfill Thomas Jefferson's prophesy.

Do the rich not have enough? How can we get them more? Will killing some poor people help them out?
Interesting, the Repubs want all babies born , but are cutting care for mothers and babies out of their proposals for a budget, while Obama cuts heat. So the babies are born , the parents get to love them, then they die from no food or warmth. Goal achieved!
The cemetery owners and obstetricians must have larger lobbies than we knew.
We live in Scroogeworld.

Making America suffer since God Knows When.
And Obama is lying in bed with them...I didn't know we were supposed to choose the lesser of the two Rethug sympathizers. I thought he had a (D) by his name, and that he wanted "change." "Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me," as they say. I don't plan to vote for him in the primaries next year...we need someone in the WH who actually gives a damn.

Spend a few trillion to kill a few aerabs.
Save a few million and kill a few poe fok to balance out.
What's the diff?
I mean, it's finding a middle ground, ain't it?
Does Obama realize that it can get minus 20-50 degrees in a lot of areas in this country?

>snip<Critics say that the program is poorly administered and that, contrary to intentions, it’s become a subsidy for energy companies, most of whom are prohibited by law from turning off services to delinquent bill-payers during weather emergencies. About 10 percent of LIHEAP funds are transferred to “weatherization” programs, according to a government study.

turn down the furnace, and learn to like cat-food in the aftermath of the tax cuts for the wealthy being made permanent for all practical purposes, because the defense/industrial complex, large corporations, including the banksters, and the wealthy must/will be taken care of at the expense of everything else if pubs are to have their way, as they have on almost every issue for more than ten year (and just look what has happened to the national debt in that ten years).

but that was soon replaced by the Austerity of Nope.
When we cried out, we were told we had developed the Propensity of Mope!
Now I, for one, am at the end of my Linearity of Rope,
And in the end, sadly, I think understand the true Audacity of Hope.
