Rick Perry accused the mainstream media of overstating the peril of Texas’s $27 billion budget shortfall during his State of the State speech Tuesday. The Republican governor is aggressively pushing a series of “emergency” legislative items that appeal to conservatives, and has been insisting since the start of the year that the budget gap in Texas shouldn’t prevent him from getting his agenda items through.
Perry’s proposals – including a voter ID law and a requirement that a sonogram be performed before an abortion – have been met skeptically in Texas political circles. But the governor used his address Tuesday to hit back at his critics. Perry pointed the finger at the “mainstream media and big government interest groups are doing their best to convince us that we're facing a budget Armageddon.”...
