Alcohol bans linked to lower STD rate

The study, commissioned by the Department of Health, took place in the Kimberley.

It showed the rates of gonorrhoea decreased by more than half in Fitzroy Crossing in the two years after alcohol bans were put in place in October 2007.

The rate of chlamydia decreased by 30 per cent.

Researcher Revle Bangor-Jones says the study produced a clear pattern.

"There is an association, a time-linked association between the intervention and the reduction of sexually transmitted diseases," she said.

1. A little more context: as I understand it, Fitzroy Crossing is a tiny town that has a history

similar to our Indian reservations in the U.S. There is a high Aboriginal population that has had a lot of social problems and Aboriginal leaders called for the ban a couple years ago.

4. I say we ban it. I have a right to sit at a restaurant and not have to listen....

to slurred, boisterous talking or potentially getting knocked down because a drunk fell into me. At the least ban it inside establishments for now and we can deal with outside later. What about the cost to our health system?
