State Senator: "Brothers don't work as hard as Mexicans"
Black SC lawmaker: Immigrants are hardest workers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- An African-American lawmaker in South Carolina says stricter illegal immigration laws would hurt the state because blacks and whites don't work as hard as Hispanics.

State Sen. Robert Ford made his remarks Tuesday during a Senate judiciary committee debate over an Arizona-style immigration law. The Charleston Democrat provoked nervous laughter after he said "brothers" don't work as hard as Mexicans.

Ford added that "the brothers are going to find ways to take a break. Ever since this country was built, we've had somebody do the work for us."

He then said whites also don't work as hard.

You assumed too much. I'm white and I worked my ass off. I worked circles around everybody.

16. Excuse me...
Your comment was pretty damn open ended and pointed to what I consider a bias in keeping with the assumptions in the OP's story.

What did you mean by asking that question?

19. The meaning of the question
was to point out your own preconceived bias. You automatically thought that I agreed with the premise. I quite simply pointed out that you could be wrong. Stings a little doesn't it? To have a race based bias.

"Ever work for a landscaping company?"

THAT question.

24. It's quite simple really.
Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 07:41 PM by bbinacan
I countered that the assumption was about how hard people worked. Why do we base things on race? The OP put forth a premise by Ford, and I wanted to see how far that premise extended. Imagine the surprise when a white shares his experience. That was unexpected, wasn't it?

Edit to add: Whites are included in the lazy category.

I didn't write the OP, I'm white, and I thought the idiot Senator was, well, an idiot. I say as much with my "what's in the water" comment... and you "counter" my comment with "Ever work for a landscaping company?"

What I'm asking here, if you will allow me to pre-digest this for you, is why did you ask the question, "Ever work for a landscaping company?" in response to my "what's in the water" comment to the OP?

Can you give a straight answer?

I did say that and it was a serious question. Was he racist? I don't think that's what he meant. He assumed that Blacks and Whites didn't work as hard as Mexicans. You and I may have reached the same conclusion. His comments were out of line.

Gotta run. Early day tomorrow. I enjoyed this. Nice responses.

...that way my boss can't see me. Uh, and after that, I just sorta space out for about an hour.

I'd probably, say, in a given week, I probably do about fifteen minutes of real, actual work.

14. He is not a man without controversy.

Ford was born in New Orleans, Louisiana;<3> his parents were leaders in the African American community.<4> Ford attended Wayne State University<3> and Grambling State University, from which he was expelled in 1969 before graduating for leading civil rights demonstrations. He was expelled by the university, despite it being historically black, because it relied on public funds which were controlled by a state government opposed to desegregation.<4> Ford was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference staff from 1966 to 1972<3> and worked for Martin Luther King, Jr. as a member of an advance team of the Poor People's Campaign.<5> He was arrested 73 times for participating in protests during the civil rights movement<6> and spent time in prison in Mississippi.<4> In 1973, he won a draft evasion trial on basis of conscientious objection.<4> Ford worked as a car salesman<7> and later became a full time legislator.<7> Ford is a lifelong bachelor.<4>

20. It is controversial to be actively involved as he was, going to prison and it is
honorable. He continues to be controversial when expressing a concern to control profanity and
also the comments he made listed in the OP.

Any interesting man, no doubt.

22. Not surprised at all. Lot of unexamined racism in the "pro-immigation" camp.
I hear about the vastly superior work ethic of Hispanic immigrants all the time. As if work habits and tolerance for abuse are genetic characteristics that manifest themselves in a cultural and economic vacuum. And as if ethnic stereotypes are less insulting and demeaning when they are so-called positive ones. I also hear a lot about how poor Americans would rather be on welfare than work. No racist dog whistling there. Nope. Nosirree.

please explain: "as if ethnic stereotypes are less insulting and demeaning when they are so-called positive ones."

"The Irish are great story-tellers." "The Irish are drunks." Equally insulting?

40. They could be
Irish-as-great-story-tellers comes from the old belief that Irish people exaggerate and can't be trusted. The belief that the Irish are drunks is, well, not exactly flattering.

That said, as a person of Irish descent I can say that the stereotypes about my group don't sting me like they did my forebears since the Irish are no longer an oppressed group in America. We were assimilated, as other Europeans were, into the "white" category. And there aren't business people currently praising our work ethic and willingness to put up with shitty wages and conditions as if it's coded in our DNA and not the result of our very limited choices.
