The Irish Times - Friday, February 4, 2011
Invasion ordered weeks after 9/11, says Rumsfeld

LARA MARLOWE in Washington

FORMER US president George Bush asked his defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, to draw up plans for the invasion of Iraq just two weeks after the atrocities of September 11th, 2001, Rumsfeld reveals in Known and Unknown: A Memoir , which will be released on February 8th.

The Bush administration’s false claim that Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the 9/11 attacks was believed by nearly 70 per cent of Americans.

Rumsfeld took his title from his own allegation that Iraq intended to provide weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to terrorists: “There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know,” Rumsfeld told a press conference in 2002.

Mr Rumsfeld now says he regrets saying “We know where they are” regarding Saddam’s alleged WMD. None were ever found. And Mr Rumsfeld is sorry he dismissed the European allies who opposed the invasion of Iraq as “old Europe” and “the chocolate-making countries”.

3. He forgot that Tony Bliar and Bush met to discuss the Iraq invasion long before 9/11
Rumsfeld should be behind bars.

7. Im no rumsfeld defender
But seriously, planning for an attack is not the same thing as ordering one.

We have plans for nuclear strikes on Russia and China. It doesn't mean
we are going to unless something else happens.

8. Illegality not confronted
...but history records that on 17/18 March 2003 the US together with the UK did invade Iraq

1 - Not in self defence &

2 - With no authorising UN Resolution mandated

If Karadzic & Taylor are to be charged for THEIR breaches of international law it will be iniquitous & possibly terminal to the credibility of the International Criminal Court if others who make similar breaches are not indicted in the same way...My cousin was Flt Lt David Stead RIP - RAF pilot of Hercules XV179 killed in action above Baghdad, Iraq on January 30th 2005 together with 8 fellow RAF crew & 1 soldier...David's girls have since grown without their father & their mother has raised them without her husband. To allow the behaviour of those who instigated ther 2003 invasion to go unchecked it is submitted would be to grant carte blanche to any future despot - whether elected or otherwise - to behave in a similar way with the result that many future wives & husbands will potentially endure the same as that experienced in my family - If this is to be allowed in the now full knowledge that it IS happening then I contest that human civilsation is beginning to reverse towards the jungle as that will be then be the natural direction consequential to the ditching of the rule of law that separates man from beast.

12. I'm sorry for your loss - but put the blame where it REALLY belongs
The first time Iraq engaged (1990s) any NATO aircraft in ONW or OSW, they broke the Desert Storm cease fire. They should have been removed at that time; however, our leadership at the time was clueless & gutless. If we had demonstrated the will to remove assholes in the 90's, the Taliban might not have been to willing to accept & protect Al Qaeda.

10. Reporters don't write their own headlines.....which is an ongoing problem
ordering plans is not ordering the invasion.

Truth and accuracy is such a cheap commodity these days.

The Hershey Company enters a new century.
Today, The Hershey Company is the leading North American manufacturer of chocolate and non-chocolate confectionery and grocery products. As the new millennium begins, we continue to introduce new products frequently and to take advantage of growth opportunities through acquisitions. HERSHEY’S products are known and enjoyed the world over. In fact, we export to over 90 countries. With approximately 13,700 employees and net sales in excess of $4 billion, The Hershey Company remains committed to the vision and values of the man who started it all so many years ago.
