The Quitter and her daughter are wanting to trademark their names

Guess they need to trademark the word "ME", while they're at it.

"Sarah Palin and her daughter, Bristol, are taking steps to protect their brand.

The possible GOP presidential candidate and her Dancing with the Stars child have filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark "Sarah Palin" and "Bristol Palin," according to AOL's Politics Daily.

The blurring of celebrity and politics has added to the bank accounts of mother and daughter..."

1. Maybe its to ensure porn producers don't use their names in parodies.
Unlike every other Palin project thus far, I don't see how they can make any money by doing this.

And fuck 'em if they think they can collect anything from people for using the names of PUBLIC FIGURES, GODDAMIT!

2. On the plus side
if it starts to cost money just to use their names, maybe we'll hear a lot less about them! I WISH!

3. My guess is
...they're attempting to quash their detractors with DCMA takedown notices and perhaps make a chunk of change via settlements from threatened lawsuits. They would go after the low-hanging fruit - people who can't afford to fight in court.

7. Not doable, like I say.
They are both public figures. And should anyone out there unrelated to them wish to name their children Sarah or Bristol, copyright law sure as fuck wouldn't be applicable! Therefore, just prima facie such a copyright request should be rejected.

9. Actually, upon reading the original article
http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/02/02/protecting-the-palin-brand-sarah-and-bristol-go-for-trademark-s/

It looks like these patent applications are just more of that famous Palin short-attention span theater. The patents were applied for in November. The office found problems with the request and has given Sarah & Bristol's attorney six months to amend the request(s?).

I still stand by what I said. While I am sure the two women want to protect their 'brand' from teh evil porn companies, I would not put it past them to abuse copyright law in order to shut their critics down. It may not legally enforceable but, consider the obstinate, vindictive source.

15. It's just that I have seen some of this behavior in regards to patents
The patents were totally, wrongly granted but this one company got them anyway and then set about threatening little (and some big) guys with lawsuits. It was quite chilling how many people went ahead and paid fees and made settlements instead of fighting this company in court.

19. Larry Flynt of Hustler has already hedged his bets
I think the name of his Palin lookalike is Serra Paylin, just to avoid any nasty legal issues.

8. and they failed
(Reuters) - Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's bid to trademark both her name and that of her daughter Bristol ran into trouble at the Patent and Trademark Office because the application forms were not signed, government records show.

Applications to trademark the names Sarah Palin and Bristol Palin were filed on November 5, by the Palin's longtime family attorney, Thomas Van Flein, but were quickly slapped down by a trademark examiner.

"Registration is refused because the applied-for mark, SARAH PALIN, consists of a name identifying a particular living individual whose consent to register the mark is not of record," the patent and trademark office said in an office action.
