Update on the lack of activity here

BY GLENN GREENWALD

Last week, I wrote that I had a bad flu and likely wouldn't be writing for at least a few days.  As it turns out, I don't have the flu, but rather dengue fever, combined with some still-unknown secondary problem.  I'd strongly prefer not to write about this but I had to cancel the series of speeches I was to give this week at various California colleges and, after notifying them of the reason, at least one of the event sponsors disclosed my condition to those inquiring about the event, so it's already been posted by well-intentioned people in various places.  Moreover, as Andrew Sullivan pointed out when writing about the illness that prevented him from blogging all last week, it's basically impossible to write everyday for years and then suddenly disappear without providing your readers with an explanation, as much as one might loathe writing about personal matters (as I do).

In any event, I've been in the hospital since Wednesday and will likely be here at least a few more days, so there won't be any postings for a little while longer.  Things aren't getting substantially worse, which is good, but they're not really getting better either, and until that happens, this lovely little hospital room will continue to be my home.  The wi-fi access provided by the hospital is both a blessing and a curse; I'd likely go even crazier than I am if I were confined here without it, but I'm neither permitted nor able to work at all, and there have been all sorts of things over the last week that I've had to fight not to write about -- like this (the video) and this and this and this and this and this.  Ultimately, though, a miserable medical condition combined with a frustrating uncertainty over its resolution makes resisting that temptation, and following the advice of one's doctors, rather easy.

I also had a touch of some critter mucking around inside my upper respiratory tract last week. Don't think it was Dengue Fever!

7. Have had it myself... The bad news is there are four serotypes...
The good news is that he'll only be susceptible to the other three. They don't call it "break-bone fever" for nothing.

8. Where the hell did he get that disease in Winter?
hese mosquitoes usually live between the latitudes of 35 degrees North and 35 degrees South below an elevation of 1,000 metres (3,300 ft).<6> They bite primarily during the day.<12> Other mosquito species—A. albopictus, A polynesiensis and several A. scutellaris—may also transmit the disease.<[br />

14. He spoke out about the reason he lives there a couple of years ago...
He lives both here and there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Greenwald

"In his entry in Unclaimed Territory for July 10, 2006, Greenwald explains, "I decided voluntarily to wind down my practice in 2005 because I could, and because, after ten years, I was bored with litigating full-time and wanted to do other things which I thought were more engaging and could make more of an impact, including political writing."<14>

In the same entry, Greenwald observes that he has been openly gay for 20 years and that, while he has lived in the United States all his life, he divides his time between New York City and Rio de Janeiro, the hometown of his male partner:

Revealingly, American law prevents the recognition of our relationship as a ground for him to live in the United States, while Brazilian law recognizes same-sex relationships for visa and immigration purposes. As a result, for the past year <2006>, I have spent substantial time in Brazil while also having a residence in New York. Spending substantial time in another country does not make one an 'expatriate.' And even those American citizens who do give up American residence and live abroad retain full rights of citizenship, including voting rights. But I have not done so.<14>

According to Ken Silverstein's interview with Greenwald published in Harper's Magazine on February 22, 2008, conducted by telephone while Greenwald was in Brazil, he lives there "much of the time."<19> On July 22, 2008, when Greenwald participated in a debate with Cass Sunstein, an adviser to then Senator Barack Obama, moderated by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, their exchange was also conducted by telephone from Brazil.<20>

In a May, 2008 interview, Greenwald explained that "even though Brazil has the largest Catholic population of any country in the world" and "was a military dictatorship until 1985": "I’m able to obtain from the Brazilian government a permanent visa because my Brazilian partner’s government recognizes our relationship for immigration purposes, while the government of my supposedly 'free,' liberty-loving country enacted a law explicitly barring such recognition."<21>"

26. Wow, I have more in common with Glenn Greenwald than I thought
I'm living in South America for very similar reasons... I'm in Argentina, and the reason I can't bring my wife to the U.S. isn't because the U.S. won't recognize our marriage, but because I don't meet the income requirement to sponsor an immigrant spouse.

U.S. immigration policy is so fascist.

18. shit.. Dengue fever can be deadly. when I was a kid, we all feared it
yellow fever was treatable, smallpox we were vaccinated against, & the hospitals had most snake anti-venom, but Dengue fever was the one we all worried about getting.

we always had to keep any mosquito that bit us.. they were plenty big enough to swat and still have a "body" to show Mom & Dad

50. If it's not hemorrhagic
The prognosis is good. Miserable, but good recovery.
the hemorrhagic variety though is much more deadly. There's a pandemic of it now in parts of Peru.

James Comey is a puzzling guy. I can't figure out if he's honest and naive, or disingenuous and complicit.

43. You're welcome, OnyxCollie! Thank you for the oustanding resources!
Mr. Comey's "Intelligence Under the Law" is a great and insightful read. Going between the lines, I can see how his mind would do all it can to make out that he's for justice, while going behind the scenes unnoticed to cover up the messes the BFEE has made.

Comey is no dummy. The guy wants to be on the side of right, for eternity's sake. And he did go against Bush and his minion Alberto Gonazalez.

I look forward to the video. Thank you, my Friend!
