Nigerian Scammers Are Getting VERY Creative!
So creative she has lost me! I have no idea what she is referring to with the "Special Hard Disc".

Hello,
I am Ms Jennifer Eze. A computer scientist with central bank of Nigeria. I am 26 years old, just started work with C.B.N.

I came across your file which was marked X and your fund released disk painted RED, I took time to study it and found out that you have paid VIRTUALLY all fees for certificates but the fund has not been release to you.

The most annoying thing is that they cannot tell you the truth that on no account will they ever release the fund to you; instead they let you spend money unnecessarily.

I do not intend to work here all the days of my life, I can release this fund to you if you can certify me of my security, and provide way on how I can run away from this Nigeria if I do this, because if I don't run away from this country after I made the transfer, I will be in serious trouble and my life will be in danger.

Please this is like a Mafia setting in Nigeria; you may not understand it because you are not a Nigerian. The only thing I will need to release this fund is a special HARD DISK called HD120 GIG, I will need two of the discs, re-copy your information, destroy the previous one, AND PUNCH THE FUND IN THE COMPUTER TO REFLECT IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT within 24 banking hours.

Then clean up the tracer and destroy your file, after which I will run away from Nigeria to meet with you. And you will be the one to provide the money needed to buy the special hard disc.

If you know you can handle this transaction and provide the fee for the HD120 GIG, send me the below information:

Your full name: Your cell phone number: Your address:
You can call me on +234-7057925550.
Regards,
Ms Jennifer Eze.

11. My grandfather fell for it not once...
...not twice...NOT EVEN THREE TIMES...

But four. (This was the previous version, circa six years ago). It wasn't until I brought him a hardcopy that we had recieved AT WORK of the exact same scam that he finally realized how much of an idiot he had been.

Then he promptly went out to the very next scam and fell for it. Three times.

Overall, he's fallen for no less than 16 separate internet scams. We finally took his computer away, only to find him mailing checks to some of these people in secret through one scammer who must have passed his name on to another through the mail. Now my grandmother has to hand him money at the moment he needs it and account for all of it, or he'll send it off to some get-rich-quick scam.

Lifelong Republican, he's just SURE one of these 'businessmen' have his best interests at heart.

10. Dear Ms Gately,
We have another Cheney scheme. Except this time it intended to prosecute and execute the former Vice President.

In order for it to work we need to buy a special Lear Jet that can fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. It will be outfitted with hidden panels so Cheney can be hidden away and avoid any detection by any law enforcement agencies. Once we have take possession of the Vice President we will whisk him away to a secret location where we will have built a detention center similar to the one built in Iraq by the USA. A tribunal court will be assembled to try him in a 10 minute trial before he is executed.

This will require a substantial amount of finance and we are calling on you to make a generous contribution of $250,000 USD. Please provide your bank financial transaction account information so we can make the appropriate withdrawal.

5. I didn't fall for this scam but did fall for the other one:
You know the one - work hard all your life, pay your taxes on time, work hard on election issues, including the issue of election machinery counting the votes.

And I fell for the idea that somehow if we ever got a Democratic President in office after Bush we would see a real change we could believe in.

Like the Wars ending, like the corrupt Torturers of 2003 to 2008 being arrested and held accountable, like return of habeus corpus, like the leadership that would be sure that we can travel freely and not be harassed by Homeland Security types, and on and on.

<sigh> And now I am becoming hardened to everything relating to politics, which is probably what the Powers that Be wanted all along.

However maybe something like "Grayson/Feingold 2012" will occur to brighten my mood.

6. I believe this is referring to the Halliburton settlement to get Cheney off the hook.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9763036

As you may already know, Dick Cheney was charged earlier this month for bribing Nigerian lawmakers with $180 million into giving a $6 billion natural gas pipeline contract to Halliburton-owned KBR, which was being run by Cheney at the time.

Considering that bribery is illegal, the Nigerian government has been pushing for an arrest warrant through Interpol, which could result in a sentencing of three years in a Nigerian prison alongside three other top executives for “the 16-count indictment,” says GlobalPost.

With the White House not looking to do much to help Dick out, Halliburton is offering a $500 million settlement to the Nigerian government.

That is half a billion of Halliburton’s money being doled out to protect a man that prosecutors believe is a criminal for helping to bribe “a brutal dictator who has been accused of actually killing people in order to advance the interests of his business partners,” according to John Nichols of “The Nation.”

Thanks for the thread, Bobbieo.

7. I first read this sentence as: "Then clean up the tracer and destroy your life"
which is probably more accurate ;-)

9. People really do fall for this stuff...
I know it's almost unbelievable, but they really do. Mostly older people get suckered. Young people are much more savvy about spam email and technology in general.

I've generally worked in an IT environment and many of my coworkers and staff used to play this game where they would scam the scammer. The goal was to turn the con on them and make them do stupid stuff like send silly pictures of themselves holding offensive signs to prove they were real.

Anyway, yeah, many people still fall for these 419 confidence scams.
