Hot New Education Trend: Segregation (Lancaster, PA)
Do they know it's no longer 1954?

<obviously predecessors of tea-party people>

At McCaskey East High School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, junior class students break into groups each day to meet with mentors for an "enriching" experience. The twist: all the groups are totally segregated by race and gender! Apparently some people object? In a statement, the school district noted "The intent of mentoring at McCaskey High School is to build strong teacher and student relations not separate students by race. The High School is disappointed by the negative perception and focus on single racial composition programming."

2. Handy tip for school administrators: when it's a really stupid idea, don't do it. Alos, read a
little recent history.

3. Since McCaskey is a city school....
it has very different problems than the all white schools in the northern & southern parts of Lanc Co.
I went to the one in the southern part of the county but we used to hang with some kids from McCaskey - black & white...back in the 60's....interesting times for sure.

At first I was upset about this but reading the article and listening to the video...I am torn.
In some respects it might be easier to discuss some things more openly in a group of similar students. I can see some benefit to that...but I can also see the down side as well. Seems to me if they choose this...they should also have groups of mixed students in addition to the gender/race divided groups.

I feel that they are at least TRYING something....just not sure if it is being perceived by the ones involved (& outsiders) as a positive thing.....
