Poll question: Worst Democratic President ever?
I'm including many of the 1800's Democrats, even though the party they belonged to really was nothing like what ours is supposed to be today.

Sorry, polls are turned off at Level 3.

19. I think those were the only ones the OP could come up with.
And, yes, it is an attempt to fling shit at President Obama. Lots of that going around just now.

26. I didn't include any of the Dems who are consistently evaluated in the top 10 Presidents
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 01:31 PM by coti
of all time, or any of the founders.

I used this graph for rankings:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_Pre...

I listed them in chronological order. Then I also put in the "Someone else?" category. Anyone with a different opinion can state it.

It's a fair poll.

18. Woodrow Wilson
When I was in high school and college (1953 to 1961), Woodrow Wilson was considered to be one of the most significant (and most progressive) presidents in US history.

Not to start an argument, but it is amazing how quickly his reputation has dropped in the last fifty years.

Among other negatives, his attacks on the rights of US citizens during WWI make anything Bush or obama have done seem like child's play. They never mentioned this back in the day.

9. You forgot FDR.
We wouldn't have to go through all the pains involved with dismantling The New Deal if that guy hadn't forced it on us to begin with.

Do I really need a sarcasm tag?

11. I have a couple of issues with Woodrow Wilson
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 01:16 PM by no_hypocrisy
1. A racist who screened "Birth of a Nation" at the White House and gave it great accolades, but not for the reasons a classic film deserves
2. Instituted conscription/the draft
3. Wouldn't support womens' suffrage/constitutional right to vote federally
4. Screwed up the Versailles Treaty and laid the path to World War II by letting France and England financially ruin Germany with demands for reparations. Concentrated on his League of Nations at the expense of the world.
5. Refused to meet with Ho Chi Mingh, a young lawyer from Viet Nam who wanted U.S. aid to gain liberation from France.
6. Bait and Switch. Ran for re-election in 1916, proclaiming "He kept us out of war" and committed the country to the war theater the very next year.
7. Had a stroke and instead of resigning or passing his duties to his vice president, his wife ran the country with the aid of "advisors".

This is a DEMOCRATIC website..says it right in the name....if you want to smear Dems go somewhere else.

If you have legitimate issues let's hear them..but posts like this are nothing but intellectual junk food.

16. Jackson (Mr. $20 Bill) and Wilson (Mr. $100,000 Bill)
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 01:28 PM by JackRiddler
If you're going to do this poll right, it should consider not the non-entities and quasi-accidental ones, but the supposedly great.

Jackson the killer of Indians. But we'll give him a pass for strangling the original Bank of the United States and for introducing the patronage system that, despite its corruption, undermined established privilege.

Wilson the scientific racist, the liberal imperialist, the liar who promised peace before an election and immediately delivered war afterward, the president during the first Red Scare and Palmer Raids. No, we won't give him a pass for the 14 Points; it was better than what the French and Co. forced through at Versailles, but progressive only by comparison and in the spirit of Empire.

ON EDIT:

The Democrats before 1865 and from 1877 to 1933 were two different parties, and the one that FDR created was a third party, now gradually coming to its end.

Out of the post-New Deal party presidents, I think the answer is also clear:

Johnson and Clinton.

Johnson for expanding a genocidal aggressive war against a distant country that did nothing against the US, in the process ruining his inspiring visions of a Great Society.

Clinton for pretty much ending the party of FDR to the favor of disastrous neoliberal and globalist policies that established a continuity in most things between Reagan and Bush II. Although it's still soon to call this the disaster a new historic era in the party's history, so we'll pretend it's not yet.
