For those keeping scorecard, Biden was not picked to be a Jury today, was dismissed at noon

VP Biden dismissed from jury duty

WILMINGTON — The vice president of the United States, along with 100 other Delawareans, reported for jury duty this morning at the New Castle County Courthouse, but by midday he had been dismissed without being called to serve on any jury.

Joe Biden, a former Delaware senator, arrived just before 9:30 a.m. and sat in the jury assembly room amid all the other prospective jurors, answering when his name was called during the roll.

<<<<snip>>>>>

Monday is generally when criminal Court of Common Pleas cases start, so if Biden had been seated on a jury, he likely would have beeen hearing a misdemeanor case, which generally only lasts a day or two.

<<<<snip>>>>>

"I don't consider myself different than any other person," he said. "This is important ... It is an honor to be a part of the system. I hope the president serves in Chicago if he is called."

BTW, you get a neat-o certificate for serving, mine is hanging in my office at work. BTW Joe doesn't know that Obama was called but got himself excused.

1. That's pretty cool.
However, I really question the wisdom of his even trying to serve. But it's good that he went because so many people consider themselves too "special" to serve and he puts a lie to that excuse. It was good that he went and sat there with the rest of the folks...they must have been blown away...

2. He most likely would not have been picked anyway
because it might taint the jury. You know the stupid people who will vote the way the "famous" person votes. But you think Chaney has ever gone to jury duty? I think not

7. Heaven forbid Cheney sitting on any jury I'd want to be on or worse, deciding my fate.
Just the thought sends a shiver up my spine...

3. Not really. As VP, he IS different from other citizens.
His time is already not only owed to the citizenry but is also determined by his position. He should not be left in a jury pool, nor should the his time be wasted in reporting for jury duty.

4. I agree with what you are saying along with the other person that responded
Too many people try their darndest to get out of jury duty.

I'm sure Biden didn't sit around on his ass the entire time. He probably had work with him but knowing Joe he probably chatted with all the other folks sitting there in the Jury Room.

Think about it, that group is comprised of people of all political leanings including neutral. What a better chance of talking to a very random selection of people and hear what they have to say about the the status of this country. Mind you there is a good chance the room will be heavy with democrats since New Castle is 2-1 in favor of the dems but there are republicans in this county too.

And it's a safe environment since guns are not allowed in the jury area.

But seriously, this is a good message that he served

5. It was a stunt. (But in a good way.)
There would be no way he'd actually serve. But he was making a point (that I happen to agree with)... Jury duty is both an obligation and an honor. Shirking it is a crappy thing to do.

As VP, he does have the time to make this point. POTUS on the other hand, really does have too much else going on to bother.

6. Good for him for showing up
I like Joe. He could've had somebody make a call to get out of it but as a lawyer and law professor
he respected the court and its time and showed up to do his duty.

Joe Biden went and did the right thing and that is a big fucking deal.
