Worsening drought to push up food prices {supposedly, anyway}

Remind me when ideal growing conditions pushed DOWN food prices?

Worsening drought to push up food prices

Published: July 19, 2012 at 4:00 AM

WASHINGTON, July 19 (UPI) -- A worsening drought ravaging much of the nation is spoiling crops and will likely hit Americans at the supermarket, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said.

"I get on my knees every day and I'm saying an extra prayer now," Vilsack told reporters at the White House after discussing the crisis with President Barack Obama.

"If I had a rain prayer or rain dance I could do, I would do it," he said, calling the crisis "the most serious situation" in about 25 years.

The nation may still have a bumper corn crop this year -- the third-largest corn crop in history -- because favorable weather early in the growing season encouraged planting, The New York Times said.

<snip>

The price of corn has increased 38 percent in recent weeks and the price of beans is up 24 percent.

Hmmmm. Vilsack and the media say it's the drought that is raising prices. (Implied: and only the drought} However, they also say weather conditions may give us a bumper corn crop this year, yet corn prices have already increased 38%. Seems like, at least as to corn, something besides the drought is operating.

Yet, media asks no questions.

Are reporters really that dumb and/or uninquisitive?

1. Ridiculous
It's not just the drought - its the heat that hit when the corn was supposed to be pollinating.
Maybe while he is dropping to his knees and praying he should pull his wallet out and put some money on some innovative energy technology - like these guys for instance: www.windstrument.com
Or put some solar on his house. Or ... anything at least remotely proactive.

2. Thanks. I knew something else had to be at work. But
his wallet? No, there is only one wallet that gets used in Washington, DC and that is the taxpayers' wallet. Well, that and the lobbyists; wallet. However, one way or the other, the taxpayers' end up supporting the people who pay the lobbyists, too.
