Obama requesting help to pay for Afghan army

By ANNE GEARAN
AP National Security Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mapping the way out of an unpopular war, the United States and NATO are trying to build an Afghan army that can defend the country after 130,000 international troops pull out. The alliance's plans for arm's-length support for Afghanistan will be a central focus of the summit President Barack Obama is hosting Sunday and Monday in Chicago.

The problem with the exit strategy is that someone has to pay for that army in an era of austerity budgets and defense cutbacks.

Part of it is that we are out of money and also out of public support, including from the worn out troops.

Another part of it is that we seem unable to do the "winning hearts and minds" thing.

We don't seem to know how to prevail if we are not actually at war with it. We end up funding the people who are attacking our troops.

Another part of it is that a great percentage of the money we shell out seems to end up in the wrong pockets, like the Karzai family.

Also, we pay people not to attack us, which ends as soon as we stop paying them, assuming that they don't just take the money and attack anyway.

We had a number of logical opportunities to declare victory and leave, including leaving at the same time that we (substantially) left Iraq or after we got Bin Lahden.

2. Actually, some places are banning bake sales because of obesity.
There's just no fun in anything anymore, be it cake and ice cream or invading a country for a few decades.

Spoil sports are everywhere!
