FL 4th graders who passed writing portion of FCAT dropped 54% from last year
http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20120514/ARTICLE/1...

TALLAHASSEE - Panicked state education officials will hold emergency talks Tuesday after early show that about two-thirds of Florida students failed this year's tougher new writing portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

Locally, at least one superintendent called for an audit of the results and scoring procedures, arguing that it is not possible the scores dropped so precipitously in one year.

For eighth-graders the passage rate was 33 percent down from 82 percent in 2011. Only 38 percent of 10th-graders passed a drop from 80 percent last year.

---------------------------------------

They said that the 4th grade essay asked kids to talk about a camel ride, which many failed to do so correctly. This is just *great* for student morale to have so many fail.

Gov. Skeletor said, the education leaders needed to get together and talk about it, "so our schools, students, and parents can have a clear understanding of the results". Wouldn't surprise me if this was some secret coordinated effort to humiliate and break schools since it is the schools who are blamed. The education governor surely will keep on top of the situation to use it against the teacher's union.

3. The Florida School Board in July of 2011 decided to raise the bar and "raise standards" for
students by both making the test harder and by raising the grade needed to pass the test. Teachers were told that the higher standards would be phased in gradually, but were not.

The drop in students meeting the standards was across the board for all students tested, fourth, eighth, and tenth grade with only 24E% of students making the grade.

Florida Writes test prompts are the most boring writing prompts I've ever seen. A prompt about camel rides is the most interesting to date. However, you must give students a prompt about something they know about in order for them to write reasonably intelligently about the subject. I doubt most Florida students have ever seen a camel other than on television or in phots, let alone come close to riding one.

The Florida School Board is comprised of politically appointed idiots who know nothing about education.

And Governor Voldemort ... just look at the photo. That should tell you volumes.
