Romney says he wanted gay spokesman to stay on job
Romney to English translation: "I wanted to have my cake and eat it, too, just as the entitled class always does."

The Grenell flap shows how carefully Romney is treading on the subject. Grenell was hired in late April to speak for Romney on national security and foreign policy issues.

A vocal supporter of gay marriage, which Romney opposes, Grenell resigned Tuesday after conservative critics raised questions about his sexual orientation. His departure also came after he was conspicuously absent from a week of campaign discussion dominated by national security issues, in part because of the one-year anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.

Grenell said in a statement that he felt his ability to do his job was "greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues."

His departure sparked an outcry among gay rights groups. Romney's comments were his first on the issue, and he did not hit back at Grenell's critics or defend him. He said it was Grenell's decision to leave the campaign.

Romney, who once claimed to be more liberal than Ted Kennedy, tried to deny gays in Massachusetts the right to adopt. Apparently, growing up in institutions or in one foster home after another, is better for kids.

This man also tried to use an outdated Jim Crow law against gays. The law said you could not marry in Massachusetts if the marriage would be illegal in your home state.

So, when our courts held that the Massachusetts Constitution required recognition of same gender marriage, Romney's peeps dug so hard, they came up with this abandoned leftover of the Jim Crow era. Luckily, the shameful history of the law pretty much blew up in Romney's face.

This, folks, is a cautionary tale of what happens when your political career overrides your principles. Or perhaps when you have no principles. Eventually, the emperor's nakedness becomes all too obvious, even if his wife is wearing the world's ugliest T Shirt.
