Thanks to the DLC, today "progressive" means "center right," even though many liberals and others seem to assume that "progressive" is a more polite synonym for "liberal," which the right of both parties has turned into a slur word.

So, this comment by Tavis Smiley on PBS TV took me aback.

This is not an exact quote but is as close as I can come, given that I don't take shorthand:

Romney is going to have a problem with conservatives and Obama is going to have a problem with progressives, so the edges of the base in both cases. Wait, let me rephrase that because conservatives would not like to be called the edge of the base.

:wtf:

2. Or, they don't want the left to exist, so they don't let it on TV.

3. One of these days we're going to have to have a discussion....
of what it means to be 'of the left'. Then we'll understand that we really are the true conservatives. And I mean that in a good way, believe it or not.

Okay, briefly....

Left = equality -> community over individuality. At its logical extreme it results in true democracy where every person has an equal say in all decisions. Downside: repression, lack of creativity, minority options/opinions can attain no purchase.

Right = liberty -> do what you damn well please. No social control by the community. At its logical extreme it results in dictatorship. But before that point is reached you pass through a stage of complete social disintegration like what we have now.

4. I am not sure how that relates to the remarks of Tavis Smiley's that I quoted?

I don't agree with your premises.

Does it really seem to you that the U.S. left is more repressive, less creative and more anti-minority than the U.S. right?

Or that the U.S. right allows more individual liberty than the U.S. left?

I would be a lot more fearful of carrying the U.S. right to its extreme than I would be about carry the U.S. left to its extreme.

Besides, I question your starting point, that equality somehow equals community OVER individuality.

Equal legal rights for women and minorities (i.e., equal legal rights for all), which indeed is a social value of the left, does not mean the end of individual or a communal system, be it finances or ideas. It simply means removing statutory obstacles from minorities so that individuals have a more equal shot at being themselves.

And seeking equal legal rights for all people is the exact opposite of allowing the majority to oppress the minority. That was done until the Warren court, possibly the most left court in U.S. history.
