19% of Americans thought they would benefit from tax cuts for the top 1%
It's a slow news day, so I thought I would find a story about something I had heard recently, namely that 25% of Americans think they are in the top 1%.

That exact premise turned out to be an urban legend.

However, I did find this, which is close enough:

An October 2000 Time-CNN news poll showed that 19 percent of Americans thought that they were in the high income group that would benefit from proposed tax cuts - defined as roughly the top 1 percent of the distribution.

This could mean that a significant portion of us are clueless and/or lie to pollsters, neither of which possibilities I discount.

Or, it could have something to do with illusory superiority.

In a related story, I once heard that more nearsighted people tend to think of themselves as attractive, when compared with the rest of the population.

1. my friend of Latino-descent cracked up at all the Cubans who voted for Bush and a common reason
is that many of them saw the Bush's as powerful, and they wanted to be like them, and voting for them would then make them rich someday. It's a common failing of humanity - voting for someone you admire and want to be like instead of the issues. So, people thinking they're richer goes right along with that. I have another friend who is DIRT poor without gov't assistance and he used to be a republican until I corrected him in 2000, and he used to be in Amway in the 90's, never did anything with it, but he still idolizes those people in convos about wealth, and goes into heavy detail when the lottery is high and he buys a ticket, so I wouldn't doubt if a lot of GOP voters are affiliated for that very reason - they think they'll become rich, or think they are...
